No suggestion has been made that Mr O'Shaughnessy knew about Bellfield's crimes.

A source told The Sun's Neil Syson and Mike Sullivan: 'As Levi did with lots of people, he got Brian in his thrall.

'When Brian was arrested he wanted to get his life sorted out.'

When approached by The Sun, Mr O'Shaughnessy admitted to having been an 'associate' of the killer, who's actions he called 'disgusting and vile'.

Bellfield is currently in jail for life for a number of murders, including Milly Dowler's in 2002 and those of Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22.

He only admitted killing 13-year-old Milly in 2015. He confessed to abducting the teenager before raping her in broad daylight in the driveway of his mother's house.

He then held terrified Milly for 14 hours, repeatedly raping and torturing her before strangling her to death and disposing of her body in a shallow grave.

The horrifying details of her final hours were made public last month following an investigation into whether Bellfield had an accomplice.

Milly's family said they found the revelation that another person may have been involved 'devastating', adding that there 'are no words to describe the additional torment and pain we have been going through since we were told this information.'
