'Tears of happiness' after Perth Hills ex-serviceman takes out $1.3m Lotto win

An ex-serviceman from the Perth Hills has become a Lotto millionaire on Saturday on the back of a ticket his mother bought him as a gift to start a new career.

The self-described battler was due to start a new job this week after being in the defence force for most of his adult life, his mother said on Monday.

"I bought him the Lotto ticket as a good luck gesture and to remind him how proud I am to be his Mum," she added.

The man said he thought something was wrong when his mother frantically called him into the lounge room on Sunday morning.

"She could hardly speak through her tears," the man said.

"She kept pointing to the thirtieth game on my Lotto ticket – the very last one," he added.

He said the pair then used the Lotterywest website to confirm the six winning numbers.

"We're delighted that someone who has given so much to their country has been rewarded with a Lotto win," Lotterywest spokeswoman Ms Compagnone said.

The ticket, which was bought at Nextra Express in Ellenbrook was the second Division 1 winning ticket sold by the retailer in less than two months, Lotterywest spokeswoman PIna Compagnone said.

We've averaged two Division 1 winners per week since ringing in the New Year," Ms Compagnone said. It was the eighth Division 1 winning ticket for 2017.

"That equates to eight newly minted millionaires sharing in more than $10 million in prize money," she added.

The win comes after an Australind father and son accidentally won $1 million in Monday's Lotto draw after they purchased a ticket mistakenly believing it was for Saturday's game.
