If you hate bringing home melted ice cream as part of your weekly grocery run then this car has the power to prevent it.
Meet the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate, a station wagon that is just as quick as a supercar.
Following in the wheeltracks of the sedan released last year, and due to hit Australian showrooms mid year, the German brand has revealed details of the more practical, cargo-carrying variant ahead of its official debut at the Geneva motor show next month.
Like the sedan, the Estate is powered by a high-output version of the AMG-developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, producing 420kW/750Nm in standard form and 450kW/850Nm in the higher-grade E63 S. Both models deliver their prodigious power to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox and an adaptive all-wheel drive transmission that helps the S model accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds (the standard E63 can cover the same sprint in 3.6 seconds).
While Mercedes made a big deal about the E63 sedan's 'Drift' mode when it was revealed, there is no mention of it in the more pragmatic Estate version even though it uses an identical mechanical set-up and features a similar multi-mode drive set-up that switches through from Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and Race settings. However, it does mention the all-wheel drive operates in a "continuously variable way from traction-oriented all-wheel drive to purely rear-wheel drive."
The biggest difference between the Estate and Sedan is obviously the additional cargo area at the back, which Mercedes claims is the largest in its class with 640L in standard form and up to 1820L with the rear seats folded flat.
Sadly, luxury and performance-focused station wagons aren't as popular in Australia as they are in Europe and Mercedes-Benz has opted not to offer the E63 S Estate locally at the moment.

Glad it's not coming here, typical Benz-ugly. Every other brand which does wagons does it better, at least in aesthetics.

Never mind a battler like you will never be able to afford one anyway. You can stick to your Daewoo Cielo.

MB design has of late... is something not to be desired. My kids label them the squashed banana cars... and I can see where they are coming from And this wagon is no real improvement...

The dog will love 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds.

Pity we now live in a land of bloated SUVs and pick up trucks. Performance wagons are a great compromise between sedan like comfort and payload space.
