Britney Spears's niece has been "seriously hurt" in a quad bike accident at the weekend, representatives of the family have confirmed.

Jamie Lynn Spears's 8-year-old daughter Maddie is said to have been involved in an ATV accident while on a hunting expedition with her father, Casey Aldridge.

Exact details of the incident remain unclear, but according to TMZ, Maddie was submerged underwater for "several minutes and unconscious" after her vehicle flipped over. Britney's younger sister, who co-parents with ex-fiance Aldridge, was reportedly not present at the time of the accident.

However, a representative of Britney has come forward to dispute a few details being reported around the incident, saying they are not 100 per cent accurate.

In a statement issued to Entertainment Tonight, the family's spokesperson said: "The details the media are reporting surround the incident regarding Jamie Lynn's daughter Maddie are incorrect. Right now the Spears family asks that everyone respect their privacy during this time and appreciates all the prayers and support for their family."

The family has not released any further details on the 8-year-old's condition, with the statement not confirming what details in the initial media reports are false.

Spears, who shares many photos of her daughter and family on social media, has remained tight lipped on all of her platforms, while Spears' father told Entertainment Tonight, "All I can say is pray for our baby Maddie," on behalf of the 25-year-old.

Spears, who now has a promising career in country music, fell pregnant at 16, ending her hit series Zoey101. At the time she was engaged to Maddie's father Casey Aldridge, but is now married to Jamie Winston.

Spears has kept a relatively low profile, raising Maddie in Louisiana with Watson. Last June, she opened up about raising her daughter out of the public eye.

"I feel like I've raised her with a lot of honesty, but I've also raised her with a lot of love," Spears said to People.

"She's a very happy, content little girl, and there's nothing more a parent could ask for. That's my most proud accomplishment out of anything and always will be."
