An Indian woman has given birth to a baby boy weighing a whopping 5.97kg (13 lbs), setting a new record for the country's heaviest baby.

Goga Bai, 30, from Rajasthan, had the super sized baby via caesarean on October 1 at Shri Ganganagar district hospital.

Doctors say that the baby is the heaviest ever recorded in India.

The mother's health may have affected the baby's size, doctors said.

Dr Anamika Agarwal, one of the four doctors who delivered the child, said the baby's size was a "surprise" to both Goga Bai and her husband Ravinda Kumar.

"The baby and the mum are in sound health and doing okay," she said.

"He is definitely the heaviest baby in the country. The normal weight of a new born baby in India is 2.5-3.5kg (5-7 lbs).

"The baby initially had problems in breathing but now is doing okay.

"Though no congenital anomaly has been detected in the child, we are keeping both him and his mother under observation and would discharge them after a week."

Dr Agarwal also suggested that the baby's weight may be connected to his mother's medical condition.

"Gogi Bai is diabetic and weighs around 100kg (220 lbs)," she added.

"In cases where the mother is obese and diabetic, there is considerable risk of child being overweight too."

According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby ever born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 10.2kg (22lb 8oz) who was born to Carmelina Fedele at Aversa, Italy, in September 1955.
