The Soul Stirrers are an American gospel music group, whose career spans over eighty years. The group was a pioneer in the development of the quartet style of gospel, and a major influence of soul music, doo wop, and motown sound, some of the secular music that owed much to gospel.
The group was formed by Roy Crain, who had launched his first quartet, which sang in a jubilee style, in 1926 in Trinity, Texas. In the early 1930s, after Crain moved to Houston, he joined an existing group on the condition that it change its name to "the Soul Stirrers." The name "Soul Stirrers" yields from the description of one of Roy Crain's earlier quartets as "soul-stirring". Among the members of that group was R. (Rebert) H. Harris, who soon became its musical leader. The Soul Stirrers formed as a Jubilee quartet, transformed their sound, influenced by many hard gospel singers such as Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Rebert Harris, also from Trinity, Texas, brought several changes to the Soul Stirrers that affected gospel quartet singing generally. He used a falsetto style that had its antecedents in African music, but which was new to the popular jubilee singing style of the time. He pioneered the "swing lead", in which two singers would share the job of leading the song, allowing virtuoso singers to increase the emotional intensity of the song as the lead passed between them without disturbing the four part harmony. That innovation led the Soul Stirrers, while still called a quartet, to acquire five members; later groups would have as many as seven but still consider themselves "quartets", which referred more to their style than their number.
Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964), known professionally as Sam Cooke, was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Influential as both a singer and composer, he is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocals and importance within popular music. His pioneering contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Billy Preston, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown.AllMusic biographer Bruce Eder wrote that Cooke was "the inventor of soul music", and possessed "an incredible natural singing voice and a smooth, effortless delivery that has never been surpassed".
Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, plus three more posthumously. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the civil rights movement.
Living Legend(s) may refer to:
The soul in many religions, philosophical and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and immortal essence of a living being. According to Abrahamic religions, only human beings have immortal souls. For example, the Catholic theologian Thomas Aquinas attributed "soul" (anima) to all organisms but argued that only human souls are immortal. Other religions (most notably Jainism and Hinduism) teach that all biological organisms have souls, while some teach that even non-biological entities (such as rivers and mountains) possess souls. This latter belief is called animism.
Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle understood that the psyche (ψυχή) must have a logical faculty, the exercise of which was the most divine of human actions. At his defense trial, Socrates even summarized his teaching as nothing other than an exhortation for his fellow Athenians to excel in matters of the psyche since all bodily goods are dependent on such excellence (The Apology 30a–b).
Anima mundi is the concept of a "world soul" connecting all living organisms on the planet.
The Fairfield Four is an American gospel group that has existed for over 90 years. They started as a trio in Nashville, Tennessee's Fairfield Baptist Church in 1921. They were designated as National Heritage Fellows in 1989 by the National Endowment for the Arts. The group won the 1998 Grammy for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album. As a quintet, they featured briefly in the motion picture O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
The group gained more popular recognition after appearing on John Fogerty's 1997 album Blue Moon Swamp, singing on the track "A Hundred and Ten in the Shade". They also undertook live appearances with Fogerty. They also appeared on the song "There Will Be Peace in the Valley for Me" by Dolly Parton on her 2003 studio album For God and Country. They were later featured on the song "Rock of Ages" by Amy Grant & Vince Gill on Grant's 2005 studio album Rock of Ages... Hymns and Faith.
The Fairfield Four's newest album Still Rockin' My Soul! was released on March 10, 2015, and won the 58th Grammy awards.

Eddie Huffman & The Soul Stirrers Singing Stand By Me
This is a Gospel classic, by the most prominent Gospel group - The Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke. I will be posting a similar pop soul tune called 'Loveable' with the same tune sung by a man under the pseudonym Dale Cook who sounded so much like the front man of the Soul Stirrers. Dale Cook was of course swiftly unmasked as Sam Cooke, who used the name to steer rumours away from his Gospel fans that he was going solo as a secular artist. Anyway both songs are superb, they are both equally wonderful and loveable!

Lyrics: [Sam Cooke] Oh Lord, the time is growing nigh When I must breathe my last breath inside Lord in my dying hour Stay with me Lord Oh Lord, my friends will gather 'round They're watching me slowly, I'm slowly sinking down Lord in my dying hour Stay with me Lord [Paul Foster] [Be with me Jesus as Background] Now Lord, Lord, now Jesus time has come When I'm must my earthly home Friends standing around, tears in their eye they know that I am about to die But I'm not worried, I'm not afraid, I know you do Jesus, what you said Just what you say follow me and you be right You will be with me Lord, day and night. Soul stirrers live on bobby jones gospel hour.
This is from the famous LIVE recording on July 22, 1955 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. We, Gospel Music historians, call the 1955 Shrine Concert great because gospel's once and future male superstars, 24-year-old Sam Cooke, 23-year-old James Cleveland, both performed on the program. James Cleveland, pianist for Albertina Walker and the Caravans, was the surprise hit that night. His gruff, commanding baritone, a voice that would be a force in gospel music for the next 36 years, was already in evidence in this live recording from the Shrine Concert. This was truly a great night in Gospel Music history.

I know the Lord will make a way for me
I know that my lord will from trouble someday set me free
That's why I never will give up the fight
But I trust in him to do whatever is right
For, o, the Lord he told me he would always make a way
Make a way, he'll make a way,
For I am trusting in your word
And my weakness make me strong
But I never will go wrong
no, if you leave me I'll be home
Someday, the Lord will make a way, I know you will
Whenever I'm in trouble, for I'm still trusting in your word
And my weakness makes me strong
But I never will go wrong
no, if you leave me I'll be home
Someday, the Lord will make a way, I know you will
He'll make a way for me
