When playing a gig as major as the Super Bowl, costume changes are par for the course. But split-second hair and make-up changes? That's something only a performer with superhuman abilities, i.e. Lady Gaga, could pull off so seamlessly.
When she began her performance on the edge of the roof of NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, Gaga's blonde hair was pulled back into an updo and her eyes were accessorized with red Swarovski crystals and what appeared to be thick swipes of black eyeliner.
After she jumped off her perch and landed on the stage below, the hair came down and the crystals came off. Both changes happened so fast, if you blinked, you missed it.
Gaga for crystals: Lady Gaga, 30, was bedazzled in Swarovski crystals from head to toe for her halftime show performance at Super Bowl 51 on Sunday
Quick change: In the middle of her 13-minute set, the singer peeled off her crystal eye mask to reveal a shimmery purple smoky eye
It turns out that the glittering make-up was a removable eye mask. Underneath, was a less dramatic, though equally gorgeous purple smoky eye look that twinkled under the stage lights.
'I took inspiration from all of the iconic looks throughout Gaga’s career and just elevated it into something new. I wanted her to be able to look at this ten years from now and have it feel timeless,' said her make-up artist Sarah Tanno.
To get the look, Sarah used a whopping 28 products from Marc Jacobs Beauty. Among them was the brand's Twinkle Pop Stick Eyeshadow in Au Revoir 406, a metallic pewter shade, that was applied on the eyelids as a base. The eyes were then lined with the Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Violet Femme 82, which was also blended into the shadow.
The singer's longtime face painter added more purple tones on the lids and in the creases using shimmery shades from Marc Jacobs Beauty Style Eye Con No 7 Plush Eyeshadow Palette in The Tease 202 and finished the look with a winged cat eye and several layers of mascara.
Bold yet classic: Make-up artist Sarah Tanno said that she set out to create a timeless spin on the Million Reasons singer's dramatic aesthetic
In the details: Hairstylist Frederic Aspiras prepped Gaga's hair for the big day with a fresh dye job that included pastel pink color at the ends
To create 'the perfect classic juxtaposition to the sparkling glamour of Gaga’s crystal eye mask and the focal point for when she removed the mask,' Sarah applied Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Creme Lipstick in Dashing 206, a cherry red.
To ensure the 30-year-old star's make-up stayed in place throughout her high-energy performance, the make-up artist dusted Marc Jacobs Beauty Perfection Powder - Featherweight Foundation in 360 Golden over the face.
As for her hair, stylist Frederic Aspiras went for a look that could easily transition from an updo to a free flowing look and had both movement and hold.
Before blow drying the Million Reasons singer's hair, which had been freshly streaked with pastel pink dye, Frederic applied Matrix Style Link Smooth Setter for hold and smoothness.
He then dried her hair away from her face and styled with a barrel curling iron. Curls were pinned and left to cool for ten minutes before being brushed out with a paddle brush.
To finish, her whole head was spritzed with Matrix Style Link Texture Builder Messy Finish Spray and Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Hairspray.
