'It's a joke and waste of money': Steve Price slams the new AFL Women's on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

Veteran journalist and radio shock jock Steve Price has called the AFL's creation of a women's league a 'joke' and 'waste of money'.

The opening weekend of the AFLW saw sell out crowds at grounds across Australia as people flocked to witness the beginning of a new era in sport.

But Steve, who is currently in the South African jungle as part of 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Here!', was clearly unaware of its early success.

The 62-year-old slammed the league as he sat around the show's campsite, much to the anger of his reality TV co-stars.

The conversation began when retired AFL star Dane Swan told Price that on a normal weekend in Melbourne he would be at the AFLW - much to the broadcaster's dismay.

'Oh yeah right. That's a joke and a waste of money,' Price loudly proclaimed.

'I mean good luck to them, I think as an amateur pursuit it's great but don't try to turn it into something it's not.'

Facing backlash from comedian Nazeem Hussain did little to deter Price from his view that it wasn't a 'spectator sport'.

But it wasn't long before former Olympic gold medalist Lisa Curry joined the debate.

Knowing all too well how hard it can be for female athletes to make it in the sporting world, Curry revealed her own of battles as a leading swimmer.

'Why are women given a hard go in sport just because it may not be a spectator sport, you could say the same about swimming,' she said.

'I got $2,000 my whole career - everything else I earned myself.'

Curry's revelation of how much she was paid to represent Australia was described as 'embarrassing' and 'disgraceful'.

However Price didn't back down in his attack on the AFL Women's league, slamming the game's administrators for its launch.

'I'm a big supporter of women's sport Lisa... but I'd give more of a voice to minor women's sport than to that [AFLW],' he said.
