A 95-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after an elderly woman was left brutally injured.

Denver Beddows, from Woolston in Warrington, was arrested after the attack on Saturday, which has left the victim, in her 80s, fighting for her life in hospital.

Mr Beddows was remanded in custody after appearing at Chester Magistrates' Court this morning.

The pensioner, who lives with his wife Olive, 88, is due to appear for a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court in March.

Cheshire Police have confirmed that detectives are not looking for anyone else in relation to the crime.

A cordon was put up after the attack in Dam Lane, Woolston, and one resident, who has lived on the road for 30 years, spoke of her shock.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Warrington Guardian: 'We were out all day and came back to find lots of police cars on the street.

'The only problem we have around here is speeding. It's a very quiet street.

'It's all very sad.'
