'I will cook for you, wash your clothes... submitting to you as your wife': MAFS bride Deborah has people questioning if it's 'the 1950s' with her VERY traditional vows to husband John

  • Deborah, 53, wed John, 53, on Married At First Sight Australia on Sunday night
  • Deborah raised eyebrows with her old-fashioned vows, which she wrote herself
  • She was initially hesitant of her husband as she expected a 'Polynesian man'
  • Meanwhile, single mother Lauren, 33, wed firefighter Andrew, 38
  • The couple appeared to hit it off, but then Lauren pulled a disappearing act

They’re the vows that had people questioning whether it was still the 1950s.

On Sunday night’s episode of Married At First Sight Australia, Deborah, 53, raised more than a few eyebrows with her choice of words at the altar.

‘I take you John to be my husband. I promise to be your soul mate and best friend, I will give all of me to you,’ she started, before adding:

‘I will cook for you, wash your clothes, care for you when you are sick, help you through the rocky times and support you in every way possible.

‘Submitting to you as your wife, I will do all these things with love. This is my commitment to you, John.’

Married At First Sight bride Deborah, 53, raised eyebrows with her very traditional wedding vows on Sunday night's episode of Married At First Sight

‘I will cook for you, wash your clothes, care for you when you are sick, help you through the rocky times and support you in every way possible,' Deborah (right) said to John (left)

The vows prompted John's eldest daughter Jessica (left) to ask her sister Emma: 'Is it 1950?'

Deborah’s old-fashioned values appeared to take John, also 53, aback, his face lighting up in surprise.

‘Those vows are every man’s dream,’ he said.

But his daughter’s Emma and Jessica appeared confronted by the gesture, with Jessica asking her sister: ‘Is it 1950?’

Deborah and John wed in a beautiful beach ceremony, Deborah making a dramatic entrance atop a throne carried by a number of men.

But when she laid eyes on her husband for the first time, he was not what she had in mind.

Deborah dreamed of marrying a Polynesian man, and arrived at her wedding on a flower throne carried by men in floral shirts

At first sight John (right) did not meet her expectations, and she was taken aback by the fact that he was not, in fact, Polynesian

‘Submitting to you as your wife, I will do all these things with love. This is my commitment to you, John,' Deborah said in her vows, but refused to kiss her husband on the lips

Deborah had asked the show’s matchmakers for a ‘Polynesian man from the islands’, and was initially confused by John from Melbourne.

‘I didn’t know whether he was my husband or not,’ she said.

‘I was expecting a Polynesian person from the Islands and so I was sort of a bit taken back that it wasn’t that.’

John, who has been married before and has two daughters, did his best to put his new wife at ease.

But after admitting he is a smoker, a hesitant Deborah refused to kiss her husband on her lips both at the altar and for their photo shoot.

‘I smelt cigarette smoke, and that’s going to be hard for me,’ she said.

‘I smelt cigarette smoke, and that’s going to be hard for me,’ Deborah said of John's smoking habit

At the reception John tried to be gentleman and pull out Deborah's chair, but she ended up falling on the floor

John's eldest daughter Jessica became emotional at the reception, but was reassured by her father

The awkward tension continued in to the reception where John, in an attempt to be a gentleman, pulled out his wife’s chair for her, only to have her fall on the ground.

The Polynesian theme also continued, with traditional dancers performing for wedding guests.

John did his best to fit in, dancing awkwardly with the men on the dance floor before his wife and their guests joined in.

‘I’m not what she expected, I can’t do anything about that, I’ll just be me and be who I am and see if she likes me,’ John said.

He went on to tell Deborah she would be welcomed in to his family, both by him and his two daughters.

‘I have to take this leap of faith and hope we will fall in love,' Deborah said

‘He wasn’t what I was expecting but I am feeling at peace with what’s happened so far,’ Deborah said.

Meanwhile, single mother Lauren, 33, wed fireman and former primary school music teacher Andrew, 38.

Lauren, who shares custody of her 11-year-old son Dylan with her ex-husband, said she and Dylan came as a ‘package deal’.

Lauren (left) appeared hesitant at first about her groom (right), as she said she would normally date someone taller

The couple quickly warmed up to each other, sharing in a passionate kiss for the camera

When she first met Andrew at the altar, she appeared hesitant as she usually dates men who were taller than he is.

‘When I first saw him, I was a little bit unsure, I have normally gone with tall guys,’ she said.

‘But there’s great banter, we’re bouncing off one another and I suppose that will deepen as time goes on.’

The couple appeared to hit it off, with Andrew unphased by the fact Lauren has a son.

‘Ideally I would have liked to have kids with someone for the first time myself, but as you get older ideals change,’ he said.

At the ceremony Andrew serenaded his wife with an acoustic song, after saying he was fine with the fact she had an 11-year-old son

The couple joked around as they cut their wedding cake together

They took a piece of cake and ate it together, before leaning in for a kiss

But after the wedding seemingly went well, Andrew was left without a wife after Lauren did a disappearing act

He went on to serenade his new wife with an acoustic performance, and they jokingly shared a piece of cake.

‘I like his character, charisma, that’s really sexy, I find that a turn on,’ Lauren said.

After the reception the couple were pictured kissing in bed in their hotel suite, but things quickly took a turn for the worse.

After going out for a drink together Lauren simply disappeared in the street, leaving her husband alone without an explanation.

‘I turned around and Lauren had vanished, she was gone, didn’t say goodbye, didn’t say where she was going, and that was literally the last I spoke to her,’ a clearly confused Andrew said.

Whether or not Lauren returns remains to be seen.

Married At First Sight will continue on Monday night on Channel 9 at 7.30pm.
