He tweeted at the time: 'Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging...'. The entrepreneur has a strong track record of getting ideas off the ground. Musk has started two transportation related companies - Tesla for electric cars and SpaceX for launching into space. He has also initiated the development of Hyperloop, a proposed method of travel that would transport people at 745mph (1,200km/h) between distant locations. Excavators working for the entrepreneur have already dug a test trench at SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, Los Angeles, Wired reported last week. The trench reportedly measures 30 feet (9 metres) wide, 50 feet (15 metres) long, and 15 feet (4.5 metres) deep.

Britney Spears' eight-year-old niece Maddie, the daughter of the singer's sister Jamie Lynn, was airlifted to a hospital near the singer's Louisiana home base, TMZ reported Sunday. The child, who was deemed in extremely serious condition, was a passenger in a Polaris off-roading vehicle that flipped over as part of a hunting trip she was on. Maddie spent several minuted submerged underwater and was unconscious when help arrived, according to the outlet.

NEW Dennis Meers, 57, was handed probation and a suspended jail sentence in St Joseph, Kansas on Monday after pleading no contest to child endangerment. His granddaughter, Cadence Orcutt, died in November 2015 when she lost control of the 2007 Chevy Cobalt she was driving and went down an embankment and overturned. The eight-year-old wasn't wearing a seat belt. Her grandfather, who was injured in the crash, was charged with allowing the third-grader to drive the vehicle.

NEW Huma Abedin and Anthony Weiner were pictured out and about in New York City on Monday with their five-year-old son Jordan. It was the the first time the estranged couple had been seen in public together since their August separation. Abedin stood by her man through multiple sex scandals, but had enough when new sexting allegations came to light in August. The two have continued to co-parent their young son though.

Brady won the Super Bowl MVP award for the fourth time after he led the New England Patriots to a thrilling 34-28 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston. 'Tom, come on up, get your trophy,' Goodell said during the MVP news conference Monday morning after grudgingly admitting that Brady was 'maybe one of the greatest players of all time.' Neither offered to shake hands although they stood and posed for pictures together. The awkwardness between them stems from Deflategate, which resulted in Brady's four-game suspension. Brady's father later accused Goodell of a witchhunt against his son.

 I feared the worst about this year’s Super Bowl. The atmosphere in America right now is so toxic, this seemed the perfect global stage for all the bitter, seething division caused by the election to erupt in one huge, unedifying orgy of hatred. The 36-year-old had earlier filmed herself celebrating the Patriots' win from the stands and was spotted screaming and waving her hands around wildly in one of the VIP boxes at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Shortly after the celebration in the box, Gisele and their children - Jack, Benjamin and Vivian - hit the field to congratulate the star quarterback personally (right).

Throughout Sunday's game, Brady's wife and brother-in-law documented their time as spectators. Brady and his mother Galynn, who's battling an unknown illness, had a touching moment during celebrations after the game when the quarterback's family joined him on the field. Meanwhile, Patriots coach Belichick was spotted with his girlfriend, Linda Holliday, who often stays away from the spotlight.

President Donald Trump ripped United States allies for failing to 'pay their fair share' for NATO expenses and boasted about his electoral support among military members Monday as he spoke to the troops for the first time. Trump said his administration 'strongly' supports the alliance. 'We only ask that all of the NATO members make their full and proper financial contributions to the NATO alliance, which many of them have not been doing.' 'They're very unfair to us,' Trump said of NATO partner nations. Trump arrived in Tampa on Monday afternoon for his visit to MacDill Air Force Base, home to the United States Central Command, CENTCOM, and the United States Special Operations Command, USSOCOM. The military base is the hub for operations in the Middle East.

Brazilian troops have been sent into the state of Espirito Santo, after police officers staged a walk-out over conditions. Thugs ran riot, with people running rampant with guns and machetes, shops being robbed, buses set on fire and dead bodies lying in the street. The chaos has been compared to the 2014 thriller film The Purge where a lawless night of terror leads to horrific crimes. Schools have been closed and even football matches cancelled in the affected areas due to the lack of security, which has meant many people are refusing to even venture outdoors.

A mammoth $450million (£360 million) sailing yacht was spotted leaving Nobiskrug shipyard in Germany yesterday evening to be delivered to her new owner in Spain after months of rigorous testing. The 468ft-long vessel, owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko, was an impressive sight to behold as it sailed out of the German Naval Yard in Kiel, north of Hamburg on Friday evening.

The actress went through quite the transformation to become the terrifying movie villain, and apparently took her tole very seriously. Costar Matilda Lutz revealed that Bonnie stayed in character while onset, saying that it was 'pretty scary' seeing her around. 'But then one day, I walked in the makeup trailer and I saw the whole process [of getting her ready],' she said.

Midwestern skies were lit up by a breath-taking meteor that caught the eye of hundreds in the early hours of Monday morning. Footage captured by a Lisle, Illinois police dashcam shows the jaw-dropping moment the glowing meteor soared across the sky. More than 100 people reported the sighting which took place around 1:30am, primarily in the Chicago area, but was also seen in Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri and Ontario, Canada.

Plasters can quickly be rendered useless if they don't correctly fit. A Japanese Twitter fan, @ponzuyo, has been sharing how to keep a Band-Aid firmly in place with a simple cutting technique. The clever trick has since gone viral with fans calling it 'genius'.

This is the shocking moment that a little, pink-clad girl joins her mother in beating a woman to the floor in a McDonald's restaurant - then kick her while she writhes on the ground in pain. The video, which is believed to have been recorded in Brooklyn in 2015 and has recently gone viral, shows an altercation between the mom (seen in left-hand image wearing black coat) and a woman (wearing red headscarf, tussling with mom in left-hand image) who she says touched her daughter. Though the details of what happened before the confrontation are unknown, the resulting violence - including the small child's shocking assault on the woman and the jeers of the crowd - were captured on camera. 

Mari Ferrari from Portugal filmed herself for an hour and 16 minutes on Sunday playing music from her DJ decks. But it isn't clear until the last 60 seconds of the video what the Mari's intentions have been. As the video draws to a close Mari reaches inside her top to remove two balloons that have been acting as fake breasts. She then pulls out the padding from her grey tracksuit bottoms that have been acting as her fake posterior before the video ends.

A girl ended up taking a nap with a group of puppies as they lay on a giant pillow with her. They all surrounded her and and took their naps as she did her best to keep them comfortable. At least 16 puppies can be seen laying contentedly alongside her as the girl gently strokes the little dogs. It's not clear where the video was shot however towards the end of the film a cage can be seen in the background which may indicate the dogs are up for adoption.

A day of gliding across a frozen lake quickly turned into a dramatic rescue mission for a group of Swedish skaters after they caught sight of a moose trapped in a sheet of ice. A shocking video has emerged of the moment the trio first notice the stricken creature thrashing wildly with its front legs sticking out of the water. In a bid to save the exhausted animal, they work tirelessly for 30 minutes chopping through a thick layer of ice with an axe to cut the creature a path to freedom. 

A viral video of an ominous fin circling a pelican close to shore has divided the internet. The footage, filmed at a beach in Western Australia just after sunrise on Saturday, was uploaded by Ian Wood who claimed it was a bull shark. But a heated discussion followed, with countless social media users convinced the underwater fish was much more likely to have been a dolphin than a shark.

Brendan Wells, 22, filmed himself and his brother, Todd, took the incredible footage while paddling down rapids on the White Salmon River and Outlet Creek in Washington State. The two are seen splashing water into the air as the bright LED lights flash. Brendan, who hopes to continue filming kayaking expeditions, said: 'I paddle here with my brother on a regular basis and we have so much fun.'

A set of stunning images has captured the moment a daredevil skier traverses one of the biggest mountains in the Alps but it is nearly impossible to spot him making his way down the slopes. Extremer skier Jeremie Heitz is reduced to a tiny spec as he swoons downs Switzerland's nigh vertical Obergabelhorn mountain at around 75 mph. The 27-year-old successfully scaled the mountain that is comprised of 800m of sheer ice and at a 60 degree angle on its north face.

This is the dramatic moment a car smashes into smithereens as it collides with a road barrier at high speed - and amazingly the driver escapes unscathed. CCTV footage captured on a stretch of highway in China’s eastern Zhejiang Province shows the motor exit a tunnel before veering off course and crashing into a metal partition. Due to the impact, the saloon rolls four times to the other side of the road with debris flying everywhere.
