A 95-year-old man has been charged with attempting to murder his elderly wife.

Denver Beddows was arrested after an attack on his 88-year-old wife Olive at their home in Woolston, Warrington, on Saturday.

Mrs Beddows suffered serious injuries and is now fighting for her life in hospital.

Her husband was remanded in custody, after appearing at Chester Magistrates' Court this morning. 

The pensioner is due to appear for a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court in March.

Cheshire Police have confirmed that detectives are not looking for anyone else in relation to the crime.

Neighbours in the couple's ordinary, suburban street have spoken of their shock at the incident.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Warrington Guardian: 'We were out all day and came back to find lots of police cars on the street.

'The only problem we have around here is speeding. It's a very quiet street.

'It's all very sad.'
