'Some tell me that they would like their partners to get back to a pre baby body and ask me why isn't thing happening.'

The fitness fanatic who gets up at 5 AM every day to run for an hour makes an effort to reply to them all with her advice.

'Firstly I tell them I'm not an expert, but an experienced and knowledgeable mum,' she explained.

'I tell them all the same thing that having a baby has a massive impact on a woman's body and not all pregnancies and deliveries are the same, therefore recovery time of the varies massively.

Simone has been advising fathers on how to support their partners who want to get back into shape after giving birth

'But I tell them the rewards of having a child outweigh anything else. I outline that it can take a long time for certain parts of the body to heal adequately in order for it to be safe post baby to exercise.

'Furthermore it's a roller coaster of emotions too, which will have a further influence on confidence and how comfortable mums are to exercise.

'I am not sure some men appreciate the logistics when or if a mum chooses to breastfeed either so I highlight this as important.

SIMONE'S TIPS FOR GETTING IN SHAPE AFTER A BABY

  • Chat to your GP or health visitor about your plans
  • Look into setting an exercise routine based around the time you have
  • Talk to your partner/friends/colleagues and family and ask them for whatever support you need
  • Try different options such as going to the gym, walking with friends or workouts with the pushchair until you find one that's right for you
  • Don't feel you've failed if a particular regime doesn't work for you. It takes a bit of trial and error
  • Plan, plan, plan: I am a busy mum so I need to get the most out of my time
  • If you can walk more this is a great way to get extra activity. Maybe park a little bit further away from work or the school to give yourself a bit of extra distance to walk
  • Try to be mindful of what you eat. I aim for 80/20, being focused on healthy eating 80 per cent of the time

'I say that many women don't feel ready to exercise, and this is a woman's prerogative to take all the time she needs.

Having a strong support network will help her feel more confident, and she should be given the chance to enjoy being a mum with a new baby. Then, should she wish to return to exercising all the support she can get is then essential.

'I tell them that the best thing they can do is ask "how can I help you"? and explain their support is the most important role they can play.
