Keeping it real: New mother shares photo of herself in a "giant mum diaper"

After giving birth, most mothers post a photo to social media.

That photo is often a close up of mum and baby, face to face, sharing those amazing moments of meeting each other for the first time.

But when Amanda Bacon, a mother of two from North Carolina, gave birth to her second baby this week, she took a different approach.

Instead of sharing a snap of her cuddling her newborn baby boy, Pierson, she shared one of her husband Ken proudly holding his baby – while she stood in the background, facing away.

Amanda is seen standing naked apart from mesh underwear lined with what appear to be maternity pads.

And it's certainly struck a chord.

Within hours of being uploaded to Facebook, the post attracted hundreds of thousands of likes.

Amanda shared this image for many reasons, as she explained in her post:

"I'm sharing this picture because it's real. This is motherhood; it's raw, stunning, messy, and freaking hilarious all rolled into one.

"Having a baby is a beautiful experience, and the realities of postpartum life aren't spoken enough about. And definitely not photographed enough."

She says many parts of being a mum are also funny, and she wanted to embrace a sense of humour as part of her experience.

"Nothing says welcome to motherhood like an adorable squishy baby, and a giant mom diaper," she wrote.

People around the world have been applauding her decision to share this moment. Some have commended her for her courage on showing the reality of what happens after giving birth.

As commenter Sarah Jayne said, "I remember looking like this after all 3 of mine! Celebrities make out that you have a baby, put your skinny jeans on and walk about looking fabulous! This is the real post birth look! Walking like John Wayne, whilst hoping your internal organs don't slip out of your black and blue foo foo!"

Others, like Jacque Griffin, were prompted to share their own 'real' post-birth moments. She wrote about a photo taken of her after giving birth to her twin boys.

"I was in the hospital bed with my legs spread wide eagle and both of my boys in between my legs sleeping and I am laid back on the elevated bed passed out. I was exhausted. I had my still huge belly hanging out of the bottom of my shirt.

"The nurse snapped the picture and printed it for me before I left. To me back then it was embarrassing. Now it is one of my favorites. It described the moment and motherhood perfectly."

Others applauded Amanda for helping educate others.

Because the truth is, regardless of how you deliver your baby (whether it be through a normal vaginal delivery, or a C-section), you will bleed after giving birth. And maternity pads, along with supportive underwear, are needed.

Not everyone knows this.

A few commenters questioned what the "nappy" in the picture was for. After others explained it, one woman noted, "It is bad that until your [sic] pregnant no one tells you any of this…"

But maybe that isn't such a bad thing, others noted. Some women cited the image of a woman needing such support down below as being yet "another reason" they didn't want to have children.

In response to such comments, many leapt to the defense of motherhood, saying that yes, there are rough times (like having to wear super-strength pads to soak up post-birth bleeding), but that motherhood is definitely worth it.

Amanda for one is certainly glad she shared the photo.

She updated her Facebook page today saying she has been blown away by "all the love" she's received from her original post, saying she's glad we can all share in and appreciate the "hilariously raw beauty" that is postpartum life.
