'Has he been on the sauce?' Countryfile fans question BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker's sobriety after he makes a spelling error and appears 'refreshed' during his forecast

  • BBC's Tomasz Schafernaker suffered a technical hitch AND a spelling error during his forecast during last night's episode of Countryfile
  • The handsome 37-year-old told viewers weather would be 'dier' instead of 'drier'
  • Many took to Twitter to ask whether he'd been 'on the sauce' prior to the report
  • In December, Schafernaker was taken ill live on air during the shipping forecast

BBC weatherman Tomasz Schafernaker left Countryfile viewers wide-eyed last night after filing a very 'expressive' forecast.

The handsome meteorologist, 37, offered his usual reporting exuberance but some suggested on Twitter that he may have had some liquid refreshment before appearing on air.

To make matters worse, Schafernaker's four-minute forecast was hampered by a technical glitch that left him ad-libbing and also a spelling error that saw him tell viewers the weather was due to be 'dier' instead of 'drier'.

Although one could argue that the BBC weatherman himself frequently sees his own name misspelt, he was teased about the weather-related typo.

One such viewer, ‏@Garystorey69, wrote: 'Watching Countryfile weather forecast has Thomaz Shaffermenackers [SIC] been on the sauce?'

@spinnerjohnthought wrote: 'It was just me (G&Ts) but Tomas [sic] did look rather "well refreshed"'

@TheRealPWB penned: 'A very expressive weather forecast from @Schafernaker on #Countryfile!'

Schafernaker himself, who famously had to stop presenting the Shipping Forecast before Christmas after falling ill live on air, clarified that he had made a spelling mistake, saying on Twitter: 'I meant drier!'

Elsewhere, the weatherman has seen his ebullient style winning him plenty of admirers.

@LindseyT loved his delivery but wasn't certain he was entirely sober, saying: 'Is it just me or did @Schafernaker seem a bit tiddled on #countryfile @bbcweather Funniest/best forecast ever.'

‏@mmadlin agreed, saying: 'I thought something was amiss too!'

It isn't the first time the meteorologist has hit the headlines. Listeners tuning into a broadcast in December found themselves concerned for the welfare of the Radio 4 weatherman after he failed to finish it due to illness - the first time it had happened in 91 years.

The queasy-sounding broadcast, at 5:20am on December 4th - hours after his office Christmas party - left some listeners seriously worried about the weatherman's health.

It was unclear what exactly was happening to the 37-year-old. Four minutes into the broadcast, he was heard saying: 'Mull of Kyntyre to Cape Wrath southerly or southerly four or five...excuse me...' before a colleague took the reins.

While there appeared to be a BBC South East Christmas party taking place on December 3rd, Schafernaker agent said he had not attended.

Until now, his biggest blunder might have been offering his middle finger to a colleague while on air in 2010...and being caught by the still-rolling cameras.

Schafernaker was born in Gdansk but came to the UK as a child.

On the BBC's weather website is is said that he developed a 'keen interest' in weather and the natural sciences at a young age 'despite his strongest abilities in the arts and crafts'.

He obtained a degree in meteorology from Reading University. During his studies he spent a short time at Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences analysing tropical weather data.
