It's hardly deemed the most riveting of professions and accountancy was even hailed as 'grey' in recent scientific research.

However, in an attempt to prove their job is far from mundane, accountants have taken to Reddit to share some 'crazy' stories about their day jobs.

From staying up past midnight and having an outfit for each day of the week to using different post-it notes to shake things up, the number crunchers do very little to disprove their reputation.

The thread, which has accumulated hundreds of comments overnight, asks: 'Accountants of Reddit, your job is always portrayed as very mundane. What are some crazy stories?'

The tales came in thick and fast, with one man revealing that a few years back, he was doing taxes for a client that were quite complex and he stayed up past midnight. 

Other tales included accountant seeing how many M&Ms they could fit in their mouths, switching to wide flags when they ran out of narrow post-it notes and using a pen and paper instead of a PC.

'One day I felt like going back to the old fashioned pen and paper route instead of excel and I got a papercut. I only cried for 20 minutes,' wrote one.

Someone also admitted to signing their email with 'Regards' instead of 'Best Regards' when they're 'hacked off', whilst another admitted he and his colleagues sometimes compete to see who can carry the most files across the office.

People shared tales about their accountants, too, with one person saying that their accountant wears the same five outfits each week, one for each work day of the week. 

They explained: 'Like she has her Monday dress, her Tuesday skirt and blouse, her Wednesday pants and top, etc. It's almost as exciting as your work life.'

Another person, whose mother is an accountant, concurred, revealing that her mother even keeps a day planner of what she wears so that the same outfit isn't worn on the same day of the week within a month.
