A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the firefighter was taken to hospital "as a precautionary measure".

Fourteen crews were on scene where fierce blaze destroyed a home at Mudgeeraba and had spread to surrounding bush.

The house and grass fire sparked an emergency situation declaration from police, as fire crews battled to get it under control.

The fire started at a Rising Fast Road property in Mudgeeraba at 12.10pm, destroying the home.

Police urged people to avoid the area, including Hardys Road, Wallaby Road and Strawberry Road.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service has encouraged locals to keep doors and windows closed, as the fire was generating plenty of smoke.
