She's known for her polished demeanour and love of a chic suit, harking back to her days as a TV journalist and newsreader.

But today Queen Letizia, 44, showed off her more sporty side as she took to the ski slopes during her family's annual winter break in Jaca, Spain.

The mother-of-two is reportedly not a fan of the sport, but she certainly showed no reluctance as she expertly ploughed her way down the slopes with husband King Felipe.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia give the cameras a cheery wave. The couple agree to pose for photos for the media in return for enjoying the rest of their holiday privately

The family are clearly accomplished on the slopes, even though Queen Letizia is rumoured not to enjoy the sport

The pair were joined by their daughters  Princess Leonor of Spain, 11, and Princess Sofia, nine, who stood out in orange and pink ski gear and matching helmets.

Meanwhile, their parents looked chic in matching black outfits.

The couple eschewed a glamorous resort such as Baquiera which was popular with Felipe's father King Juan Carlos and became the most famous resort in Spain thanks to his patronage.

Like many European royals, the family have an agreement with the media where they pose for official photos in return for being allowed to enjoy the rest of their holiday privately.

However, William and Kate last year broke with tradition by making a top secret visit to Courchevel with their children George and Charlotte.

The couple invited just one photographer to capture their first family holiday with Prince George, two, and ten-month-old Princess Charlotte, and the pictures were only released after their return.

The royal couple shunned more glamorous spots in favour of Jaca which has some of the best resorts in the country
