AFLW plays of round 6

Fremantle finally win, Brisbane seem unstoppable, the Dees upset Adelaide, Erin Phillips takes a hanger and Collingwood kick a record score.

Stephanie Chiocci and Moana Hope lead the charge against the struggling Giants to help the Pies to their third win this year.

It was the first match of the season played at Collingwood's home ground, which was deemed too small in capacity for some of the bumper clashes between Melbourne clubs.

The game kicked off just after 11am, an unusual time for football, but the atmosphere was lively.

Fans bought rounds of coffee rather than beer and the few clouds that hovered pre-game soon cleared to reveal a hot and sunny day.

The Giants' Erin McKinnon jogged off injured early in the fourth quarter after a heavy tackle, the only injury concern of the match.

Collingwood player Kate Sheahan, who two weeks ago suffered a season-ending injury just minutes into her football career, was snapped on the sidelines supported by crutches, cheering her teammates on.

Why Collingwood won the game

The Pies dominated out of the centre, finishing the match with 38 inside 50s to GWS' 13.

They were more skilled than the Giants, they used the ball more cleanly and applied more pressure around the ground.

The 55 to 19 scoreline flattered the lacklustre Giants,

Play of the game

Collingwood captain Chiocci was key in setting up a late goal, booting the ball into the Pies' forward 50 then returning to help it along again, into the hands Brittany Bonnici and eventually Hope.

With a little bit of luck on her side, Hope sent the ball bouncing through for a goal.

The moment people will talk about

Hope let her footy do the talking on Sunday.

With the teams had been locked in a back-and-forth through the centre for most of the second quarter, it was the Collingwood marquee who burst the game open.

Hope took possession on the wing, and then took off. After a couple of bounces, she centred the ball beautifully for teammate Jasmine Garner, who fumbled the mark but then ran into an open goal.

Hope became one of the faces of the women's game before the season got underway, but has not dominated as expected in the Pies' attack.

There have been questions raised about her fitness.

In setting up Garner to goal, then booting two of her own, she reminded critics that her football instincts are good, even if other elements of her game need work.

What the win/loss means for the teams

The inaugural AFLW season does not include a finals series, so which team becomes season premiers will be decided in a grand final match between the so-far undefeated Brisbane and either Melbourne or Adelaide.

But prior to Sunday's match Collingwood had won two games and GWS just one, so the teams were a good match on paper and would have seen it as an opportunity to notch up at least one more victory before the season's end.

Now with three wins in a row, the Pies will be left wondering what might have been had they started the season more strongly.

For the weaker players hoping to get another run in the AFLW next year when a new round of skilled-up under-18s will nominate for the draft, each match is an opportunity to prove their worth.
