Train began as rootsy, heartland rockers, with frontman Pat Monahan tapping into his inner Bruce Springsteen on 2001s Drops Of Jupiter. The San Francisco quintet now look more to OneRepublic and Maroon 5 for inspiration, and this tenth album is a poppy affair. Play That Song recycles American standard Heart And Soul. The lively Drink Up is about seizing the moment. Latin beats and cod reggae are embraced, but the prevailing sense of fun feels forced..

Kehlani Parrish was a member of teenage girl group PopLyfe, but the Californian uses this debut to consolidate her switch to soul-baring solo act. The singer, 21, turns the insecurities of a troubled upbringing into fierce, and occasionally coarse, pop. The candid R&B; of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott are obvious touchstones. Just dont expect her to help with the domestic chores. I dont care to do the dishes, I aint no wifey, she sings on Do U Dirty.

British-based New Yorker Bryden was planning a career in opera until she heard Janis Joplin, but the singer and radio presenters fifth album, out on her own label, owes more to the phrasing of Joni Mitchell and the soft, smart songs of Carly Simon. In The Morning could be a Coldplay piano ballad, but Brydens best tunes reveal a more personal touch: Lie To You offers sisterly advice to a friend; The Olive Tree is a sentimental paean to motherhood.

The Pace Of The Passing (Island)

It would be hard to think of a more niche indie-pop record than this the first solo effort by Ed Nash, bassist with London quartet Bombay Bicycle Club. From his self-deprecating alter-ego to his whimsical lyrics, it is the archetypal side-project. Many of Nashs songs embrace the buoyant arrangements of his day-to-day band, and female guest vocalists, including Liz Lawrence and Watford siblings The Staves, add shimmering harmonies.

Rose Dougall was once the polka dot queen of retro Sixties kitsch in pop band The Pipettes. The Brighton singer has come of age since fronting Mark Ronsons touring band, though, and this hazy, but confident, solo debut reiterates her growth. Chiming guitars and swirling electronics dominate, with power ballad Answer Me written with Miike Snows Andrew Wyatt. The folky pop of Take Yourself With You evokes Dido. The disco sheen of All At Once recalls Blondie.

THE FLAMING LIPS

Oczy Mlody (Bella Union)

The Flaming Lips rein in recent excesses with their most mainstream move since frontman Wayne Coyne got Justin Timberlake to don a dolphin suit and guest on Top Of The Pops. Bizarre titles and experimental arrangements remain, but Oczy Mlody is tuneful and accessible, with Galaxy I Sink driven by cinematic guitars.
