Police warned about Queens jogger's killer months earlier

Chanel Lewis was charged on Sunday with murdering 30-year-old Karina Vetrano at Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach, Queens, on August 2. The 20-year-old was led out of the 17th precinct in the afternoon (center) after having his arrest announced by the NYPD. He was arrested on Thursday at his mother's home in Brooklyn, less than five miles from where Vetrano's body was found, after police matched his DNA to traces found under the jogger's fingernails. The pair had never met before when Lewis, a former honor roll student, beat, raped and strangled her, said detectives. One of Vetrano's Howard Beach neighbors reported him to 911 acting suspiciously in May, two months before her death. Police arrested him on Thursday after rediscovering a log of the call while carrying out a sweep of reports made in the area to try to solve her murder. Vetrano's parents Phil and Cathy (bottom right) said they would be in court on Sunday night to watch the 'demon' face second degree murder charges.
