Moisés Simons (born Moisés Simón Rodríguez; 24 August 1889 in Havana, Cuba – 28 June 1945 in Madrid, Spain), was a leading Cuban composer, pianist, and orchestra leader. He was the composer of El Manisero (The Peanut Vendor in English) which is considered by many to be the most famous piece of music created by a Cuban musician and has since been recorded by other musicians from around the world hundreds of times.
Moisés Simons was born on 24 August 1889 in Havana, Cuba. The son of a Basque musician, he started studying music with his father, Leandro Simón Guergué. By the age of 9, he was the organist at his local church in the barrio of Jesús María and choirmaster of the Pilar church. At 15, he undertook advanced studies under various maestros in composition, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, and instrumentation.
Later, Simons became a concert pianist and musical director of lyric theater companies. He worked at the Teatro Martí where musical comedies by Ernesto Lecuona were performed. He then moved to the Teatro Payret under contract to the Spanish composer, Vicente Lleó, who directed a zarzuela company with whom he toured throughout Latin American including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Central America.
Simons is a surname. Notable people with the surname include:
Don Valley Village is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located north of Highway 401, and is bounded by Sheppard Avenue to the south, Leslie Street to the west, Finch Avenue to the north and Highway 404 to the east. Like the nearby Don River Valley (to the east), the neighbourhood has hill and dale topography.
The population in Don Valley Village mainly consists of mostly Iranian and Arab immigrants, with sizable Asian, African and Caribbean populations as well. The areas residents are mostly low to middle income. It is home to four notable housing projects (Sparrowways, Villaways, Allenbury Gardens, and Brahms) which comprise the infamous "4 Corners."
The neighbourhood, developed in the 1960s and 1970s, occupies the space that was originally a collection of farming hamlets in the early 19th century. In 1963, Consolidated Building Corporation developed a large part of Don Valley Village, advertising three-bedroom houses for $16,550, and providing a "trade-in" on purchasers' current houses.
"El manisero", known in English as "The Peanut Vendor", is a Cuban son-pregón composed by Moisés Simons. Together with "Guantanamera", it is arguably the most famous piece of music created by a Cuban musician. "The Peanut Vendor" has been recorded more than 160 times, sold over a million copies of the sheet music, and was the first million-selling 78 rpm single of Cuban music.
Maní, maní, maní… si te quieres por el pico divertir, cómprame un cucuruchito de maní...
Maní, el manisero se va, caballero, no se vayan a dormir, sin comprarme un cucurucho de maní.
The score and lyrics of "El manisero" were by Moises Simons (1889–1945), the Cuban son of a Basque musician. It sold over a million copies of sheet music for E.B. Marks Inc., and this netted $100,000 in royalties for Simons by 1943. Its success led to a 'rumba craze' in the US and Europe which lasted through the 1940s. The consequences of the Peanut Vendor's success were quite far-reaching.
The number was first sung and recorded by the vedette Rita Montaner in 1927 or 1928 for Columbia Records. The biggest record sales for "El manisero" came from the recording made by Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra in New York in 1930 for Victor Records. The band included a number of star musicians such as Julio Cueva (trumpet) and Mario Bauza (saxophone); Antonio Machín was the singer. There seems to be no authoritative account of the number of 78 rpm records of this recording sold by Victor; but it seems likely that the number would have exceeded the sheet music sales, making it the first million-selling record of Cuban (or even Latin) music.

One of Hollywood's versions of the famous "El Manisero," here sung by 19 year old Jane Powell. She's trying to impress famous opera star Lauritz Melchior by incorporating some of her other operatic talents. The original song is from Cubano "Moises Simons." Notwithstanding this particular interpretation, the melody we hear is still one of the most famous Cuban songs of all time! Also, the most famous orchestral leader of the day is the beloved Xavier Cugat, and his phenomenal orchestra! Enjoy!

Don Azpiazu introduced authentic Cuban dance music to US audiences when his Havana Casino Orchestra travelled to New York to cut EL MANISERO "The Peanut Vendor" for Victor Records in 1930. The record started a rumba craze which lasted until the 1940s although the record is technically not a rumba. The catchy song became one of the biggest selling Cuban hits in history. Azpiazu had star musicians Julio Cueva (trumpet), Mario Bauza (Sax), and singer Antonio Machin in his group. He also used American singers such as Chick Bullock to help popularize his music and paved the way for later bands such as Xavier Cugat and Desi Arnaz. El Manisero , The Peanut Vendor, is based on a street "pregon" or shout. The song has been recorded at least 150 times by musicians such as Louis Armstrong, R...
