This is how not to reverse your car.

A motorist had a remarkably lucky escape in Williamstown this morning when he reversed out of car park on Ferguson Street, and over the top of another vehicle parked by side of the road.

Both vehicles ended up on the footpath outside a restaurant about 8.15am, with the rear wheels of the reversing car mounted on top of the other vehicle, which had rolled onto its roof.

Tow truck driver David Camov said the 48-year-old driver of the blue Magna, from Newport, said he put his vehicle into reverse and promptly lost control.

"He went to accelerate and the vehicle just took off on him," Mr Camov said.

"The second car was was just parked. The person that owns that car was in the shop right behind it doing carpentry work. He just saw his car get rolled over."

The driver of the Magna was not injured, and was able to climb down from his wrecked vehicle.

"He was an ex-panel beater," Mr Camov said.

"His car is fixable but the other one that got hit, that's a total loss."

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said firefighters washed away oil that had leaked onto the road.

Both cars were towed away.
