Women lusting after a beautiful bouquet of flowers this Valentine's Day might do well to consider whipping out their own wallets for a change, florists say.

According to the National Flower Promotion Group, men are increasingly happy to be on the receiving end of a floral delivery.

A recent survey showed that nearly 70 percent of men would like to be sent flowers, especially on Valentine's Day, the group said.

Auckland florist Iain Stephens backed up the figures, saying that around 20 per cent of his clientele are women purchasing for the men in their lives.

Wellington florist Alice Beavers, from Expressions on Boulcott St, said the number of women buying for men had been increasing for around ten years.

"People aren't as embarrassed," she said.

"Women will usually just send a single rose or something like that."

Beavers said, however, she didn't think men appreciated flowers in the same way women did. "I just don't think men find it as special."

The flower promotion group said in general men were more attracted to clean-cut, bold flowers in bright yellows, blues and reds  - definitely not pretty pinks.

It suggested tropical flowers like orchids as "a good bet", or the "more masculine and funky" anthurium and heliconia.

Roses were still the most popular gift on Valentine's Day, group chairman David Blewden said, but some buyers were branching out.

"Mixed bouquets of fresh, locally grown, beautifully presented flowers are also growing in popularity.

"Hydrangeas, dahlias, gerberas, lilies and lisianthus are popular additions to Valentine's Day bouquets and posies."

Stephens said the trend to mix bouquets with just one or two roses was a "sign of the times."

"Red is still a Valentine's Day colour, but a single red rose alone or in a mixed bouquet sends the same message," he said.

Just remember girls, the best way to say thank you for his efforts on Feb 14 is to make an effort to celebrate Steak & BJ day on March 14. He doesn't want Flowers, he wants YOU !!!

Wanting or not wanting flowers is a false dichotomy. What about wanting flowers versus wanting a bottle of wine versus getting nothing?... there's a myriad of gift options available to compare aganist each other.

And this article assumes something rather typical of "marketing based journliasm", which is essentially the copy and paste of an industry led press release (National Flower Promotion Group???) - the target market here is exclusively heterosexual, so the article just assumes that guys have female partners...

Ask men if they would like to be sent flowers or BEER and then see what the outcome is.

Are you kidding me!? About 40% of the men responding to the poll would like flowers? Young men these days are soft in the loins. Perhaps we should put them all in the same room so they can sync up and have a good cry. Don't worry ladies, there's still plenty of real men out there who prefer that you wear the make up and will treat you like a goddess.

I wonder who could stand to benefit from this new trend? As if we needed more evidence that Valentine's Day is a commercial gimmick...

If my wife got me flowers I'd get her a cordless drill.

I don't know any guy who wants flowers on valentines! A strip-o-gram more like, or a nice meal with lashings of alcohol. Lol you guys are so base. But we love you.
