Catherine and David Birnie (pictured bottom left and right) were only caught when their fifth victim, Kate Moir (pictured main), escaped from the sadistic killers' home in south-west Perth in 1986. Ms Moir was just 17 when she was kidnapped, shackled to a bed in chains and repeatedly raped after the 'very drunk' teenager accepted a lift home from the killers after a night out with friends. Ms Moir, now 47, has revealed the harrowing details of her ordeal in her first television interview.

The wife of a man who died of heatstroke just weeks ago has welcomed the couple's first child into the world. Emily Hall, the widow of Brisbane pilot Matthew Hall (pictured together at right), gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Harrison Matthew Alexander, on Thursday morning (pictured at left with cousin Isabella Longginou). 'Matt and I created the most perfect little man. My reason, my everything,' Emily posted to her Facebook page after her son's birth.

A federal appeals court has denied the Justice Department's request for an immediate reinstatement of President Donald Trump's ban on certain travelers and all refugees after a furious legal battle erupted. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco instead asked both the state of Washington and the Trump administration early Sunday to file more arguments by Monday afternoon. The Trump administration appealed a federal judge's ruling that temporarily placed the ban on hold. The higher court's denial of an immediate stay means legal battles over the ban will continue into the coming week at least. Acting Solicitor General Noel Francisco forcefully argued in the government's brief Saturday night that presidential authority is 'largely immune from judicial control' when it comes to deciding who can enter or stay in the United States. The 45th president was confident that the Department of Justice would win its recent appeal against the Seattle court ruling while attending a ritzy Florida gala.

Malcolm Turnbull's phone conversation with Donald Trump has been ridiculed by Alec Baldwin (left) on Saturday Night Live. Baldwin, who played the US President on the American sketch comedy TV show, poked fun at last week's heated phone call with the Prime Minister. An actor (right) portraying Mr Turnbull thanked the president 'for still accepting our refugees', referring to the deal with the Obama administration for agreeing to take in 1,250 refugees from Australia's offshore detention centres. Far from impressed, the Oscar nominee responded: 'No, no, no. No refugees. America first. Australia sucks...' before he abruptly hangs up on the prime minister.

Two young women have been winched to safety after becoming trapped in a sea cave in Sydney's east. The women got into trouble in the sea cave north of Waverley cemetery at Bronte Beach at about 3pm on Sunday. Social media users were unimpressed with the women for 'wasting' taxpayer money and 'finding it funny'.

Police are investigating a claim that teenage cancer patient Eli Stewart (left and inset) told lies about his stomach and lung cancer. Alan Crossan, founder of The Clutha Trust, made the allegations to the police after the charity gave him a $1,500 guitar and allowed him to perform at the Clutha pub in Glasgow. He has also been accused of failing to pay another charity after staging a gig for them at Ivory Blacks nightclub in Glasgow. Police have confirmed they are investigating the claim.

Authorities have revealed new details about Heather Turner's movements before her disappearance almost 20 years ago as part of a full review into the cold case. The teenager was last seen by her best friend Kali Edmonds at around 1pm on January 16 - and never returned home that day. Her fully-clothed body was found two weeks later in a creek at Port Gawler.

Dramatic scenes have unfolded after a stolen car rammed a police vehicle on Sydney's northern beaches before the occupant assaulted the officers (left and right). A man driving a stolen white Jaguar 4WD hit a parked police vehicle with two officers inside just after 1pm in Freshwater on Sunday. The officers then followed the car and attempted to stop it only for the driver to reverse the 4WD into the front of the police car causing considerable damage (inset).

Tomorrow will see the Queen mark 65 years since her accession celebrating her sapphire jubilee. A Canberra teenager who started an online petition in a desperate attempt to eat meat pies again is 'stoked' he can enjoy the classic Aussie fare once more. Ryan Kennedy, 14, (pictured left and right) turned to change.org seeking 'justice' after he was left devastated at the prospect of never being able to eat a meat pie again after a bet with mates went horribly wrong. The Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club player made a bet with his teammates on Saturday he would score 50 in a match but didn't. In just a few short hours, the petition exceeded the 250 required signatures. Ryan told Daily Mail Australia: 'I am absolutely stoked with the result'.

Shocking footage appearing to show a man drenched in blood forcing a crucifix down his throat has emerged online. The disturbing video posted on YouTube is believed to have been filmed in South America and shows the man convulsing in a chair grunting in demonic tones. Blood is splattered on his chest while he is surrounded by topless men who seem to egg him on while a drumbeat builds to a crescendo in the background. The man is sprayed with water as he speaks in  tongues and bangs his feet on the ground.

Mary Ellis, who was in a select gang of female pilots known as the 'Ata-girls' (inset) who flew during World War II, celebrated her 100th birthday by flying over West Sussex (left). And over her shoulder was one of the actual Spitfires she flew during her 1,000 flights as a First Officer with the Air Transport Auxiliary (top right). Mary was handed the controls of the 275mph twin-seater as it swooped over West Sussex. After about 15 minutes, she turned for home, and told her co-pilot Matt Jones: 'Goodwood on the nose, you have control...'. Then she settled back to enjoy the ride back to base. Mrs Ellis toasted a glass of champagne with co-pilot Matt Jones, managing director of Boultbee Flight Academy (bottom right).

A snowman, pictured, clad in traditional Arab headgear has attracted attention on Twitter after the normally scorching United Arab Emirates was hit by a freak blast of snowstorms. Temperatures plummeted to -2.9 degrees Celsius in the mountainous region of the Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, inset, according to the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology. The UAE is usually known for scorching sunny weather all year round - but puzzled locals have spent the weekend sledging.

These spectacular images show lion siblings seemingly trying to rip each other part - but moments later they're once again best pals. The snaps were taken at Antelope Park in Zimbabwe by Irish photographer David Jenkins. He said: 'It was very exciting and fast - a real challenge to try to catch with a camera. After the fight, they were exhausted (bottom right) and just collapsed on top of each other before catching a much needed catnap.'

Wildlife photographer Chris Knight traveled to the village of Xcalak on Mexico's Caribbean Coast, near Belize. He took photos of the crocodiles on a 'sweet-spot' shallow enough for them to stand in but deep enough to find prey. He first spent a few days diving in the area and learning about crocodiles before thinking about his camera settings. He then proceeded to capture his stunning shots.
