Two police officers have been taken to hospital after a man allegedly rammed a stolen four-wheel-drive into their car on Sydney's northern beaches on Sunday afternoon.

The man had allegedly stolen the white Jaguar 4WD from Moore Road in Freshwater about 1pm.

Shortly after, the Jaguar hit a parked police car in which two police officers were sitting on Lawrence Street, police said.

Police followed the vehicle and tried to stop it on Albert Street.

The Jaguar stopped, but then reversed and rammed into the stationary police car, causing significant damage to the vehicle, police said.

The police officers, both male, were treated for minor injuries.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, had allegedly unsuccessfully tried to steal another car earlier in the afternoon in neighbouring suburb Queenscliff.

He was arrested at the scene and was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

He is assisting police with their inquiries.
