Andy Friend after the match

- On South Africa

"They're a quality side. The first try, not many teams can score that. Then just (our) discipline (hurt us), but that came from another penalty. We said at the start of the game we wanted to keep the pressure on them and you give a quick tap penalty and pressure is relieved and they can come at you hard. I thought discipline hurt us today."

- On his own team

"For young blokes I thought they put their bodies on the line and that's all you can ask. We need to get stronger, which we will. We've got 18 or 19-year-old boys out there so game five of a two-day tournament, there's tired bodies and they're learning what their body is going to go through so I was really proud of their efforts. We will get stronger in time though."

- On the overall tournament thus far

"Our target was quarters, so to go one better and go in the semis we're really pleased and proud of those young blokes. But when you get to a semi you want to go one better and you want to get to the final. You're always looking to go to the top of the tree, whilst that's disappointing on reflection (we didn't get there), we'll say it's a good result to get there (top four)."

Full-time: Australia 12, South Africa 26

Australia have been knocked out of the Cup by South Africa. They'll play New Zealand in the third place final, just like the women did in the bronze medal match.

Aussies in the bin, go down further

A five-man Australia concede another try. South Africa up 19-5 with 2:43 to go

12-5 at half-time to South Africa

A penalty conceded against Stannard results in South Africa scoring shortly after. At least Australia are in this one. Remember, they lost 28-0 to South Africa in Wellington last weekend.

Aussies hit back

Tim Anstee with another five-pointer. What a tournament he is having. James Stannard misses the kick, 7-5 to South Africa. 2:20 to go in first half.

Australia go down an early try

Within the first 45 seconds, South Africa flex their muscle and go over for a five-pointer.

It's going to be very difficult from here for Andy Friend's men.

England are through to the Cup final

They've dusted off New Zealand in a big upset. A lot of cheers from the Aussie crowd there surprisingly.

Carlin Isles' speed gets put to good use.

Fiji trail Argentina

What's doing? Fiji try to get a bit too cute with their offloading as Argentina mop up the scraps to score their second try.

14-5 with two minutes to go in the first half.

France beat Japan 19-12, Fiji up next

Can the world champions make amends for their loss to New Zealand earlier? They take on Argentina.

A few results from this afternoon

Japan lead France 7-0 after four minutes

Russia defeated Samoa 17-12

Canada overcame Papua New Guinea 33-20

Kenya were too good for Scotland, winning 19-14

Andy Friend and stand-in captain James Stannard quotes

Friend

- On the emphatic win

"I thought our defence set the tone. We've been working really hard on that defence and trying to shut down opposition's time and space and I thought we did that really well there so that was really pleasing."

- On South Africa, who they will play in the semi-finals

"They're a quality side, they've won two tournaments already this year. They're going to be tough. We'll have a good look at them now. They're a very structured side. You know what they're going to do. We've got to try and get them out of their structure."

- On captain Sam Myers' injury that has ruled him out of the tournament

"Really disappointed. Sammy's our skipper and someone that's been leading these boys really well but he went down so Chucky (James) Stannard stood up which is outstanding. I thought he was brilliant there."

- On home support

"It's amazing what belief does with a bit of home support. With every game those boys are growing. You never know in this game of sevens."

- On the heat (Google says it's 34 degrees at the moment)

"If anything we're probably more acclimatised to it than most. South Africa are very similar, they're in a similar climate zone. We knew it was going to be pretty tough for the Welsh so we were pretty pleased when we got the 1:04pm game and it was 37 degrees."

Stannard

- On the heat

"It's pretty hot out there. It's about 37 (degrees) but it feels like 50. The boys did well out there. Wales struggled in the heat there."

- On riding the wave of momentum

"The key is taking that game from that Scotland game. South Africa are a fast, physical team, they've got some individual brilliant players in their team but we've got to back our momentum at the moment."

- On the home crowd (many of whom are ripping into the rum and cokes in the western grandstand as we speak)

"The crowd pumps you up… we don't get that anywhere. We get booed a lot around the world and I think it's great that you run out and everyone's with you."

Australia progress to the semi-finals

The Thunderbolts have annihilated Wales in the quarter-finals, running out 26-0 winners in front of a big crowd at Allianz Stadium.

Two tries to Henry Hutchison led the way as Australia get ready for a semi-final with last weekend's Wellington Sevens champions South Africa. Game to be played at 4.15pm.

That's a massive turnaround after the first New Zealand game yesterday.

I'm going to duck down to the sheds to get some reaction.
