Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a Telstra exchange in Brunswick.
Thirty firefighters were called to the fire in Frith Street about 3:35pm on Thursday, as flames engulfed some of the wiring inside the building.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Ian Morris said it took half an hour for firefighters to extinguish the fire.
There were no people inside the building.
The MFB sent out a message to locals advising them to avoid the area.
Telstra spokesman Michael Zappone said the fire did not disrupt services to customers.
VicRoads said the smoke was not causing traffic delays.
