Soviet Kyrgyzstan[edit]

The statement that 'Nearly 10% of the capital's population were Jewish' needs to be revised or removed. In 1989 the total population of Jews in the capital Frunze was 4822, or 0,78 % of the total number of residents (Source: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9D%D0%B0%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D0%91%D0%B8%D1%88%D0%BA%D0%B5%D0%BA%D0%B0). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kalkaman1555 (talkcontribs) 19:02, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Background[edit]

The third paragraph suggesting that a unitary parliamentary form of government has been in place ever since independence in 1991 needs to be revised and changed as 'Since a popular uprising of 2010, Kyrgyzstan has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic'. (Source: https://www.ndi.org/kyrgyzstan) Previously, there was a super-presidential system with first a unicameral and then since 2000 a bicameral legislature.

The following also needs to be updated - 'Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's 5.7 million people'. As of August 2016, the population is 6 mln (Source: http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/kyrgyzstan-population/).

'Russian language remains widely spoken', not because of 'a century long policy of multiculturalism', but a long period of 'Sovietization' that has been particularly noticeable throughout 1920s-40s. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russification).

Etymology[edit]

Kyrgyz means 'kyrk' (forty) and 'yz' is a plural form. It literally means forties (not 'we are forty').

According to the epic, Manas fought against the Khitans, not the Uygurs (https://themoscowtimes.com/articles/unesco-recognizes-kyrgyz-epic-of-manas-30280). The ensuing part on Uygurs would be hence rendered irrelevant.

Finally, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of only Russian influence, NOT persian or mongolian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kalkaman1555 (talkcontribs) 19:20, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
