Private Sydney: Why Karlie Kloss is a role model for social climbers

Never underestimate the hustle of a country girl.

That was the lesson learnt this week when PS was thrust into the orbit of Karlie Kloss, the 6-foot supermodel who is the face of the new David Jones winter campaign.

Karlie Kloss' secret code

One-on-one with the American fashion model on life on and off the catwalk.

The former Victoria's Secret Angel was reportedly engaged for a hefty fee of $1.5 million to pose and walk for the department store's bi-annual new season launch, the usual media opportunities were offered up but with strict caveats that no questions were to be asked about politics or her friends.

To the uninitiated, Kloss is a 24-year-old model who Forbes listed as the third highest earner last year, after she banked more than $13 million and fronted 18 advertising campaigns.

She has 6 million Instagram fans, a paltry figure compared to her pretty peer Kendall Jenner who boasts more than 73.5 million. However it's her real life connections that are worth investigating, and who are a lot more beneficial than a random double tap on a phone screen.

While she's a part of Taylor Swift's inner sanctum, the revered "squad", these days the small town girl from St Louis is working on ensuring she has friends in higher places.

Prior to heading to Sydney she holidayed in St Barts for three days "just for fun and some sun" with the next generation of Murdochs, where she swam in the azure waters of the Caribbean with Rupert's youngest children, Chloe and Grace, and lounged around in robes on private yachts with the businesswoman at the centre of 2014's "racist chair" incident, Dasha Zhukova, wife of Russian oligarch and Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

She is regularly spotted out with Wendi Deng and Princess Beatrice, however, her powerful connections may be a symptom of her long-term relationship with Josh Kushner – brother of Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The two are Democrat voters and took part in the recent Women's March protesting Trump's presidency, something that will no doubt be a sore point when she visits her other bestie, Ivanka Trump, at her new Washington digs. In recent months, Deng, Trump and Kloss have become regular swans of Fifth Avenue, flocking to gala events and tennis matches, like the US Open final, around New York.

Kloss is now working on establishing a relationship with another small-town model turned member of the jet set elite, Elle Macpherson.

The pair lunched recently after meeting and staying in touch "thanks to technology", Kloss told PS.

"She is an amazing role model, businesswoman and she's a great mentor. She's got such great advice and has had a very long-running career and also built incredible businesses along the way. That's something that has always excited and interested me, learning about business and using this job that I have to learn from others who are the best in class in what they do and eventually start a business of my own at some point."

Not that she needs a leg up, when Kloss is not being a top model – something she's been doing for about a decade – she's also enrolled at NYU as a part-time student and has already established a software coding company that offers scholarships to young women and is the co-founder of a cookie brand that makes vegan and gluten-free treats which donates some of the proceeds to charity.

Jerry Hall and Sarah Murdoch bond over cashmere cardigans in Sydney

While 2016 may have been the year love died and when the world was Trumpified, a beacon of hope shone out from an unexpected source: Rupert Murdoch's heart.

As Brad and Ange split and James and Mariah imploded, the 85-year-old gave us the real life Love Actually sequel by marrying Jerry Hall.

While the octogenarian was busy terrorising his troops at Holt Street or watching over his Merino flock up at Yass, the fourth Mrs Murdoch was joined by another Mrs Murdoch for a spot of shopping and lunch in Sydney.

Dressed in the eastern suburbs mother's group uniform – all white – Sarah Murdoch accompanied the Texan model/actor around Surry Hills this week with the pair popping into Wheels and Dollbaby to pick up some new cardigans.

Hall and Wheels and Dollbaby founder Melanie Greensmith go way back.

After meeting in 2010 when Hall was in Perth honing her seductive craft during a season of The Graduate, the two quickly bonded over their weakness for leopard print and aging rock stars (Greensmith is the long-time partner of Divinyls' guitarist Mark McEntee).

"She would pop out the front of the theatre for a ciggie and then one day she came into the store that was just across the road and we just clicked," Greensmith said.

The designer then became a regular at "Jagger Mansion" in London, where she ate cake with Georgia May and Lizzy and bonded with Ronnie Wood's wife, Jo, but admits to not seeing her pal much these days.

"We usually catch up when I'm in London but she's spending a lot of time in the US with Rupes," Greensmith said.

"We missed each other by a few days in Sydney, which is sad, I'd love to see Sarah's house, I love that Tuscan influence," she said of the Bellevue Hill pile.

Local divas didn't disappoint at David Jones

David Jones may have bought out the big guns with supermodel Karlie Kloss stealing the show, however our local stars did their bit to command attention at the winter launch held at St Mary's Cathedral this week.

Former David Jones ambassador Montana Cox who has spoken about the "bittersweet" ending of her contract with the department store showed up with the bravado of one attending an ex's wedding. Dressed in a micro-mini Alice McCall lace dress, the leggy model sat front row and was the life of the after party.

Lara Worthington was a special guest much to the excitement of the waiting press pack crammed underneath umbrellas. It's the first time the new mother of two has been home since the birth of her second child sometime last year, name and sex still unknown.

Dressed in a pale mint green Celine dress – her own, according to her people – she opted out of talking as "it was raining".

She spent the night catching up with old friends, Romance Was Born designers Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett and new activewear queen Pip Edwards. Gone were the days of sipping bubbly – she was more keen to talk about adventures in breastfeeding with other guests Bianca Spender and Kit Willow.

Spender, a busy mum of two who was juggling back to school eve with a looming deadline for her new collection, was a trouper who attended even with a dislocated elbow.

Off the runway, David Jones ambassador Jessica Gomes was giddy about wearing a wedding dress for the finale.

The LA-based model and aspiring actor has been the face of the department store for five years now.

So where does she want to be in the next five years, PS asked.

"I'm 32, I want to start a family," she said.

Consider this your notice, Xavier Samuel.

Gomes has been dating the Twilight star for several months now.

Meanwhile another Aussie making waves in the US is Perth-born model Bridget Malcolm, who walked in the show.

She warmed up for DJs by appearing in the Victoria's Secret show last year and will head back to New York to prepare for the international collections which kick off in the coming days.

The model spoke of her fear of the new POTUS and is now considering a permanent move to LA with her husband.

"I've never felt an energy like it, it was a very, very, very grey day [the inauguration]," she told PS. "Here's hoping LA does secede."

Why more Australian women are growing their armpit and leg hair in February

Here's hoping the sales of Lady Remington take a dip this month thanks to Australian women who are growing their armpit and leg hair to raise awareness of domestic violence.

Get Hairy February launched this week with more than 280 women pledging to let their bodies do what nature intended while raising funds for The Full Stop Foundation, an organisation that works to prevent violence against women and provides support to those affected.

The inaugural peer-to-peer campaign has already received $10,000 in donations.

"This is not a negative action campaign, like stopping drinking for FebFast, it's about letting your body do what it's supposed to do. It's about a positive affirmation, rather than a negative one," director Alex Andrews told PS.

Andrews established the initiative about 18 months ago after she gave up shaving. She says it is about ensuring women have the choice to shave or not to shave. She also wants women who chose not to shave to do so without shame and stigma.

Last month Lola Kirke – younger sister of Girls star Jemima Kirke and star of the upcoming film American Made with Tom Cruise – attended the Golden Globes and made headlines for accessorising her floral Andrew Gn gown with hairy armpits.

She received death threats after posting a video showing off her dance moves wearing nothing but beige underwear and showing off her impressive underarm growth.

"Women's hair really ignites a response. Men grow moustaches and have leg hair, arm hair and facial hair but it never raises questions about their hygiene, their intelligence, their attractiveness or their professionalism like women's does," Andrews said.

Andrews, a law graduate, has spent months researching the topic of hair.

"All because in 1915, a large company ran an advertising campaign telling us that hair on a woman's legs and underarms was 'ugly and embarrassing'," she said.

While Sydney's laser hair removal clinics are harder to get into than the Masonic Lodge at this time of year, Andrews is hopeful the campaign will take off.

Dog loving, Tinder professional crowned Bachelor of the Year

Once upon a time, the Bachelor of the Year was considered the Brownlow Medallist of the dating world; now he's probably that guy you swiped right on Tinder.

Since the closure of Cleo magazine, the mantle to crown Australia's most eligible bloke has fallen to sister publication Cosmopolitan and a dating app disguised as the Yellow Pages for casual sex, Tinder.

The A-list swanned around St Mary's Cathedral's forecourt quaffing Bollinger and gawking at Lara Worthington ahead of the David Jones show.

Meanwhile, the stars-slash-aspiring "influencers" of last year's cycle of The Bachelor pulled on their best bandage dresses and sipped a budget sparkling wine from Germany as the 2017 winner was crowned.

Gone are the days of celebrities being put forward by their managers or cute athletes being dobbed in by their mates, like former winners Andy Lee and Olympic swimmer-turned-restaurateur Eamon Sullivan.

This year's winner, RSPCA inspector Ryan Anderson from South Australia, nominated himself.

"Ryan self nominated on his Tinder profile and was catapulted to the top thanks to thousands of right swipes and the public vote," Tinder founder Sean Rad said.

After receiving the title and a $5000 prize, Anderson showed off why he's a hit on Tinder.

"I'd like to use the exposure to get more rescue dogs adopted," he said.

Anderson's older brother, who could pass as his twin, was mistaken for the winner later in the night.

More numbers were exchanged on iPhones than the ASX on a busy trading day.

Some guests ended up in the pool, claiming they needed to "cool off" on the drizzly evening.

Less concerned with meeting the next 30 potential Bachelor stars were the alumni of the reality series, Keira Maguire, Olena Khamula and Steph Dixon.

They spent most of the night posing for photographs and crediting their "glam squads" on social media.
