It has been a wet 24 hours in Darwin, with a dumping more than 200 millimetres of rain over the city, causing havoc on the roads.

Senior Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecaster Hatem Ibrahim said there had been heavy rain around the Top End, with the heaviest falls in Darwin.

There was 202mm recorded at the airport and 290mm at Shoal Bay, about 15 kilometres from the city centre.

The wet weather is likely to continue in Darwin until at least tomorrow, with a chance it could ease later in the week as a tropical low develops off the coast of Western Australia, Mr Ibrahim said.

"We are expecting that with the forecast available ... we will continue to experience a monsoon burst," he said.

"But there is still a slight chance that we could end with not much rain happening after Wednesday ... depending on how it develops."

He said as the monsoon trough drifted southwards tomorrow the Katherine area would be the greatest focus for the rain, with a chance the Katherine Bridge will flood.

He said the bridge flooded when water levels went above 16 metres, and at 9:00am today the levels were at 9.8 metres, up from 6 metres on Saturday.

Fatal crash in Berrimah

The rain caused havoc on the roads in Darwin, with a detour put in place around Kimmorley Bridge on McMillans Road due to flooding.

There was a fatal car crash at the corner of Amy Johnson Avenue and Tiger Brennan Drive in Berrimah, after a car slid into an intersection and hit a traffic light pole about 1:00am.

The car caught fire and the driver died, with two passengers taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

"The male inside the vehicle unfortunately [was] trapped and was unable to be extracted by his fellow male passenger and a passerby who tried to get him out," Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said.

Trees were brought down by squally winds, with one coming down at the entrance to the hospital. No-one was injured.
