A man who flicked a cigarette out of his car parked illegally outside a NSW police station has been charged with allegedly being in possession of $3500 worth of methamphetamine.

The man, 50, was sitting in his Holden Astra outside the Belmont station on Saturday afternoon when members of the Lake Macquarie police's target action group saw him.

Police said the officers observed the car was parked in a No Stopping zone before they saw the man flick a cigarette out of the window.

They spoke to the man before searching him, where police alleged pulled a bag of "ice" from his pants and attempted to throw it into a nearby drain.

He was arrested and charged before being granted conditional bail to appear in Belmont Local Court on March 1.
