Summer arrives in time for the Waitangi long weekend
Kim Westcott, Saturday February 4, 2017 - 10:16 EDT
For most of the North Island, Waitangi weekend will be prime BBQ weather, with warm and mostly sunny conditions.
Today, temperatures will remain in the mid-twenties north of Hastings, and low-20's for the remainder of the North Island. By Sunday, mid-20's are likely throughout, with eastern parts such as Gisborne and Napier nudging 30's by Monday.
In the South Island, the West Coast will see temperatures in the low-20's with a few showers to dampen celebrations. Across the Southern Alps, sunnier skies will see Christchurch hit 29 degrees today and 31 degrees by Sunday. The gusty change will move across the South Island during Monday and Tuesday, bringing an end to the balmy summer-like days.
For those eagerly awaiting the rain around the drought-declared parts of the Hawkes Bay, there is a chance of some healthy falls mid-week.
