Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

This version of Wikipedia is written in English (see Main Page#Wikipedia languages). With this being said, this page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion.

Contents

Standard procedures[edit]

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If you want to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, go to Wikipedia:Translation. Or instead you can leave a message on the contributing user's talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be nominated for deletion.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as Xerox or What Language Is This? to find out. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Articles that are not in English are still subject to all other forms of speedy deletion should they meet the criteria, and can be nominated for deletion by prod or afd should an editor feel they warrant deletion for a reason other than the language it is in, an article not being in English is not itself a criterion for deletion until the two week period has passed. Also, foreign-language articles are still subject to blp prod.

When a page listed here has been translated, its entry should be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

Boilerplate text[edit]

Translate page[edit]

For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page.
2.1. If you know what language was used, add:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~
replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language.
2.2. If you cannot identify the language used, add:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (see available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is:
{{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|<optional text>}}~~~~
Bilingual versions of this template have been created for Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, and French. See the note on these at {{uw-notenglish}}.

Translate section[edit]

If there is just a section that needs translation:

1. Use the notice {{Not English|NameOfLanguage|section}}, with the word "section" as a second unnamed parameter at the beginning of the non-English content. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page, as above.
3. You may wish to place a note on the talk pages of contributors of non-English material, saying that English Wikipedia is meant for English-language content, inviting them to translate it, and, if appropriate, suggesting the location of the Wikipedia edition for the language in question should they wish to post content in that language.

Cleanup[edit]

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section.

Pages for consideration[edit]

If you are not completely sure of what language an article is written in, check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

List of Norwegian television series[edit]

The language of this article is Norwegian. Manxruler (talk) 01:22, 19 January 2016 (UTC)

  • Delete this one. All the entries are also Norwegian entries, the left columnn in the list is all in Norsk Bokmal and does not link to any English articles at all, this is just ridiculous. i'll PROD it. Si Trew (talk) 08:22, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

The list is a good idea in theory, which is probably why the prod was removed. But nobody has bothered to touch it since it was dumped in its current form in July 2011. Do we wait another 5 years, or take it to AFD? AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 04:15, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
We could consider reverting it back to before the no-wiki table was copied in and then trim that down to only blue links. Stand-alone list articles are subject to WP:N and I personally only give an exception to navigational lists (lists that show what articles are available on Wikipedia, thus they should only contain blue links). I don't see sources for the red links, nor do they have a nav purpose (obviously). --HyperGaruda (talk) 05:06, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Beijing city fortifications[edit]

The language of this article is Chinese. Just the references. Daniel Case (talk) 22:37, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

It appears that in January 2016 Joel.Miles925 added a translation of the references to the bottom of the article. I think the translation needs to be copyedited, then added to the inline citations. Then the original Chinese can be deleted. I will start the work of moving the citations inline, but I cannot confirm the accuracy of the translations. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 02:53, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
I have finished the task of moving the English so that it appears directly after the Chinese. But I have to say, it looks like a machine translation to me and probably would have to be done from scratch. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 04:44, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

February 2015[edit]

Notre-Dame de la Garde[edit]

The initial language of this article was French. bad machine translation from travel guide. Once english is made comprehensible will require a re-write for style and tone. I got about 2/3 through a first pass of deciphering. Will require enough knowledge of French to refer to the page on that wiki; it's almost incomprehensible Elinruby (talk) 13:12, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

@Elinruby, looks like you're doing a great job over there. Have a question for you, and other experienced translator/copy-editors seeing this comment, namely: is there a standard way to leave a "pointer" or other indicator of how far you have gotten, or otherwise to apportion translation/copy-edit tasks among more than one editor?
I looked at this article and it's quite long; jumping around in it, I can see edited portions that are good now, and other sections that range from okay to poor, and it's easy to see which those are, but the article is so long, I don't wish to spend tons of time reading the whole thing just to assess which parts still need work. Not to mention the fact that I don't wish to barge in on the first "poor" section, and end up with an unintended edit conflict with you. Any ideas from anybody on how best to do this? As a first guess, I'm thinking a section on the Talk page of the article itself to discuss how far one has gotten, or alternatively, "I plan to translate sections X through Y next" or something. I'd be happy to help out on this article, but don't wish to duplicate effort or step on your toes. Thoughts? Mathglot (talk) 21:58, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
@Mathglot, if you are interested in picking up on the article, I couldn't be happier; I put it back on the list recently when I realized that I took it off when I started work on it, intending, at the time to finish it, but as you say, it is very long and while my French is quite fluent I don't have any particular background in architecture, let alone religious architecture, in either language. I was worked on several articles on this as a public service back when I was sick and unable to work, and picked this one because I was rather saddened by the comment that it was incomprehensible, which indeed it was. It does seem to be an important landmark, but I have since gotten quite busy and have other translation projects I have also not finished and am more personally invested in. If you do not pick it up and nobody else does either, I will try to get back to it, but meanwhile yes, it still needs considerable help as of about 2/3 of the way through and after that will still need a re-write for style as it was almost certainly a machine translation of a French-language guide book. I'll come back and give a precise indication of where to pick on on translation per se. Elinruby (talk) 19:50, 8 February 2015 (UTC)
My translation-improvement effort stops in the section after "side walls" in Archtecture:Exterior. I worked on that section a bit, I think, but there is an incomplete sentence and I do not have time to go research what it is in fact supposed to say. And @Mathglot, thank you for bringing a template to my attention, possibly it does apply and if so I will try to put it on there anon ;) Elinruby (talk)
Yeah, lots of specialized vocab, it's slow going. Did a few subsections, not sure how much further I'll take it. I may update sporadically as I have the time. Left breadcrumbs in the History so you can see pretty exactly what I've done. Mathglot (talk) 02:35, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Exactly the right way to do it, @Mathglot:. Church articles are really hard, how one does translate virginals for example? It's very hard. Thou art my downsitting and my uprising, it is kinda impossible to translate it properly. I think the difference between the Roman catholic and Protestant traditions makes it harder, too. Si Trew (talk) 08:38, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi, referring to the entry statement: the article stems from fr:WP, click here for fr:WP article not from a travel guide. Some external links are not available in English version. I noted this there. bkb (talk) 12:02, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
I meant the tone of the French original sounds like it's word for word from a guidebook, so once the translation gets straightened out it will probably need a re-write for readability and tone. As for copyright, I believe their guidelines are different than ours, and I haven't noted a similiarity to any particular text...In any event it's my understanding that a translation from another wiki is ok as long as it is labelled as such. (?) Elinruby (talk) 07:58, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
I know this is rather late to say, User:Elinruby, but what I usually do in the midst of translation is say "First draft" or something like that in the edit summary, and in the text itself put a comment <-- need to look this up --> and sign it with the four tildes in the text. Of course we are not supposed to sign texts but that is then hidden in a comment so a future editor can then realise I am not a total idiot, just an average idiot, that at that time I didn't have time while doing all the other fiddly bits to look up some technical term which I can probably translate literally but there is something probably more idiomatic if I catch my breath. I couldn't think of electoral commission earlier, for example, but went back and linked it later. I'll have a gander at this one cos maybe I can do some tidying, now it is settled down a bit. Si Trew (talk) 23:52, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
@Elinruby:Translation from another wiki is definitely okay, per WP:Translation. @SimonTrew: The other thing you could do, is to place a {{In use}} or the even more targeted {{In translation}} on top of the article page itself, which while less specific than your html comment at least alerts other translators and editors that something is going on. Other possibilities: leave a short snippet in the foreign language untranslated, and tag it {{Not English-inline}} which may attract other eyeballs so it's not all on you to fix it. Unfortunately, those templates don't have a reason= param, but you could use {{copy edit}} instead, which provides a for= parameter you could use to say exactly what you wanted. Two other editors (mostly) have worked on this, doing what appears to be copy-editing of that portion of the Google translate that is intelligible, and dropping the rest. I've started in on doing some translation, including restoring some of the dropped sentences with new translations, and also putting some of the dropped sentences back into the article, this time in the original German since the garbled English was useless and immune to copyediting, so they can be translated later. They are all tagged {{not English-inline}} and can be easily found. There were also a great number of missing wikilinks as well as some incorrect ones. I also resolved some red-links and added some {{ill}} links where de has the link but we don't. This article is well worth having, and I'd like some additional help here from translators. A very BAD machine translation. I have put some heroic effort into this, which was somewhat interesting from a puzzle solving POV. I am currently on strike after realizing that the "trade shows" and "fairs" that were puzzling me were in fact literary salons. Yes. Trade show is sometimes translated as a salon, into French, but Gertrude Stein (it was realizing that we were talking about Gertrude Stein that was the key) definitely didn't stage trade shows. It's now a bad and incomplete article that still has some language issues, but much better than it was.
