See instant results as you type

As you start to type your search, Google Instant predicts what you're looking for and starts to show results for your search. If you don't see the results you want, keep typing and the results will update.

Change your instant result settings

Note: If you want your Google Instant setting to be the same on every browser you use, make sure to sign in to your Google Account before updating your settings.

  1. Visit the Search settings page on your computer or tablet.
  2. Under "Google Instant predictions," choose when Google should show you results as you type.
  3. Select Save.

Where instant results come from

The possible searches that you see are based on what other people are searching for and the content of web pages indexed by Google.

Instant results aren't appearing

If Google Instant is turned on but you aren't seeing instant results, try the suggestions below.

Check if speed is the issue

You’ll only see predictions if your computer network is fast enough.

Test if your speed is the problem

  1. Visit the Search settings page.
  2. Under "Google Instant predictions," choose when Google should show you results as you type.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Look at the gray text that appears beneath "Only when my computer is fast enough."
    • If you see Instant is currently on for web search, speed is not the issue.
    • If you see Instant is currently off for web search, speed is the problem.

Ways to improve your speed

  • Upgrade to the latest version of your browser.
  • Avoid running large programs, like streaming movies, in the background.
  • Upgrade to a newer computer.
  • Upgrade to a faster Internet connection. For example, if you have a dial-up Internet connection, try switching to a broadband Internet connection.
Try typing more

You’ll only see results as you type if our algorithm has a pretty good idea what you're looking for. So if you're not seeing Google Instant results after typing the first few letters of your search, try typing a few more. If that doesn't work, you might need to press Enter to see results.

Other reasons instant results might not show up
  • Google Instant results only work from the Google homepage or a Google search results page.
  • Google Instant works on Firefox 3+, Safari 5+, Internet Explorer 9+, or Google Chrome 5+. If you’re using an older browser, you'll need to update to the latest version to see instant results.
  • You’re on a Google domain or language that Google Instant doesn’t support.
