Mechele Robinson, 45, was arrested after a boy entrusted in her care had been beaten

A woman was arrested after a three-year-old boy in her care was found beaten and asleep inside a garbage bag with bruises on his genitals, police said.

Mechele Ann Robinson, 45, was entrusted to take care of the boy after his mother was sent to prison in August, according to a Springfield police detective in Oregon.

The boy, who was found sleeping inside a garbage bag tied around his neck, is now safe in the care of his grandmother.

Robinson faces charges of criminal mistreatment, assault and reckless endangering.

A relative went to her home on 10th Street on Tuesday evening, and found the boy sleeping on the floor of her room, according to Detective David Lewis.

She was alarmed to find him inside a garbage bag tied around his neck and called the police, Lewis said.

When the boy emerged, he was covered in bruises after he was beaten with kitchen utensils, Lewis said.

He also also bruises on his penis from a plastic clamp Robinson reportedly used to punish the boy for wetting the bed, Lewis said. The clamp was not on his body when he was found.

The three-year-old was examined, but did not require medical treatment.

Lewis told NBC: 'There's quite a pattern of abuse here that keeps getting uncovered slowly, so we're not done.

'I don't think we know all of the abuse yet. The child's talkative, but he's a 3-year-old child.'

Robinson is held in Lane County Jail and scheduled to appear in court on March 9.

The boy's biological mom is serving time for theft, and will be released at the earliest in January 2018, the Register Guard reported.
