The Law, Crime and Community Safety Council (LCCSC) assists the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) by developing a national and trans-Tasman focus on fighting crime and promoting best practice in law, criminal justice and community safety.
The LCCSC consists of ministers with responsibilities for law and justice, police and emergency management. Each Australian state and territory, the Australian Government and New Zealand Government is represented by a maximum of two ministers.
The LCCSC's responsibilities cover the broad themes of law enforcement and crime reduction, law reform and emergency management. The LCCSC’s priorities for 2015-16 are in the areas of:
- strengthening national security
- domestic violence
- methamphetamine and ice
- serious and organised crime
- Indigenous community safety
- cyber safety, especially for children
- laws and other protections for working with children
- building the resilience of Australian and New Zealand communities to deal with disasters
- ensuring Australian laws and related processes are modern, just, appropriate for their purpose and efficient.
