She was later diagnosed with a cutaneous mycobacterial infection.
The infection caused boils on her legs and she required surgery to remove them, leaving scars.
Payne filed a complaint with the Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology, which then investigated the salon and revoked its license, stating the salon 'was negligent in failing to clean the pedicure chair basins.'
She also filed a lawsuit through the firm Allen, Allen, Allen, and Allen, which filed the lawsuit against the salon for more than $1m.
An attorney for Payne said of the ordeal: 'It's taken a confident, attractive young lady and made her to be self-conscious about her legs.'
The salon's original owner, Thu-Huong Thi Vo, did not respond to any media requests and did not attend attend today's court session but through a former attorney had denied the allegations.
