Elgin may refer to:
South is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. It is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. South is the polar opposite of north and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word south comes from Old English sūþ, from earlier Proto-Germanic *sunþaz ("south"), possibly related to the same Proto-Indo-European root that the word sun derived from.
By convention, the bottom side of a map is south, although reversed maps exist that defy this convention. To go south using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 180°. Alternatively, in the Northern Hemisphere outside the tropics, the Sun will be roughly in the south at midday.
True south is the direction towards the southern end of the axis about which the earth rotates, called the South Pole. The South Pole is located in Antarctica. Magnetic south is the direction towards the south magnetic pole, some distance away from the south geographic pole.
Roald Amundsen, from Norway, was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911, after Ernest Shackleton from the UK was forced to turn back some distance short.
Pep rallies are a gathering of people, typically students of middle school, high school, and college age, before a sports event. The purpose of such a gathering is to encourage school spirit and to support members of the team for which the rally is being thrown. The pep rallies are often very loud and have a lot of excitation to keep all the students excited for the upcoming game and to cheer on the team.
At a pep rally, cheerleaders will often lead in boisterous chants and dance moves intended to get the student body involved and supporting the school's team. Games between competing classes with small prizes may be held. The school's band will often play upbeat music in between demonstrations, and the drumline may play. In the case of a homecoming game, the Homecoming "court" may be chosen and announced.
This is also a time for the team captains to let the school know how their team are doing this season. Most schools have pep rallies to honor future and past events.
College basketball teams celebrate the opening of the season with Midnight Madness, an event similar to a pep rally.

Take a seat in my grandparents' car as they capture a drive home through South Elgin in 1984. The trip starts near Randall Road and Silver Glen and ends at Gilbert and Elizabeth Street. This was a cool find and I just had to share.

Traveling the new Illinois Rt. 390 Toll Road on July 5, 2016, the first day that tolls became active, both westbound and eastbound along the entire route. Back in 1994, I traveled the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, this same route, during the week of its opening. I was 13 years old. My original intent was to travel on it July 4th, the last day it was free, but I was too busy. So I decided to ride it on the first official day of tolling. This was taken around 9:00AM, the tail end of rush hour, and traffic was generally still light from the holiday. Given that, traffic still seemed unusually light. Maybe people were in protest. I don't know. But with so many alternate routes (e.g. IL Rt. 19 and IL Rt. 20), I don't see a lot of need personally to travel this toll road much in the future. Thanks f...

Elgin is a city in Cook and Kane counties in the northern part of the U.S. state of Illinois. Located roughly 35 mi (56 km) northwest of Chicago, it lies along the Fox River. As of 2013, the city had a total population of 110,145, making it the eighth-largest city in Illinois. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832 led to the expulsion of the Native Americans who had settlements and burial mounds in the area, and set the stage for the founding of Elgin. Thousands of militiamen and soldiers of Gen. Winfield Scott's army marched through the Fox River valley during the war, and accounts of the area's fertile soils and flowing springs soon filtered east. In New York, James T. Gifford and his brother Hezekiah Gifford heard tales of this area ripe for settlement,...
