Perth Stadium coloured with lights

WA sports lovers will be illuminated by an "unparallelled" lighting system at the new Perth Stadium.

Westadium chose Philips Lighting to do the mid-year installation, which will see the largest LED stadium lighting system of its type in the world come to Perth.

"The scale of the project really demonstrates how seriously Australians take their sport and events," Philips Lighting ANZ general manager David Gardner said.

Perth Stadium's roof canopy will act as a giant canvas for spectacular light shows that can feature patterns and imagery via connected LED light points.

The system can create a completely immersive lighting experience for the 60,000-seat venue, making it ideal for a variety of sports including rugby union and league, soccer, cricket as well as entertainment events.

Dockers and Eagles fans can expect the roof to represent the colours of their teams during AFL games, as evidenced in smaller Philips systems installed at other global stadiums housing sporting giants like Chelsea and Juventus in Italy, while the exterior of the $1.2 billion stadium will also be lit creatively to suit the occasion.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said stadium construction was progressing well and "remained on track" for completion ahead of the 2018 AFL season, with 70 per cent of the project now complete.

Construction is currently focused on internal fit-outs, the aluminium facade is almost complete and 40 per cent of seats are in place.
