As Josh faces an empty house, coupled-up friends and a flagging love life that even a threesome can't seem to fix, he may also have to face the idea that it's time to grow up.
The comedian made the surprise announcement in a statement on Friday, saying he was happy to leave the show at its dramatic season four conclusion.
"Ultimately we decided this because we are really happy with what we've made and feel like it is complete," the 29-year-old actor said.
"I want to thank everyone who has watched the show and sent me a friendly note. This show is so intensely personal, it recreates the most intimate moments of my life and lays them out for anyone to watch.
"Seeing how people have connected with this show has been tremendously confidence building for me and I'm really grateful for that. Thank you."
Producer Todd Abbott said the emotional finale convinced them to go out on a high.
"So many viewers have let us know that this recent season had a profound effect on them that we really don't want to spoil that by going back to the well one too many times," said Abbott.
"Across four seasons, Please Like Me has chronicled Josh's entire twenties, but that period in his life has come to a conclusion. We're storytellers, and we're really happy that this particular story has been told.

Please Like Me debuted on ABC in 2013 before airing in the United States on cable network, Pivot. The series, based loosely on Thomas's life as a queer millennial, was nominated for an international Emmy Award in 2014 and received glowing praise from Girls creator Lena Dunham on Twitter.
Locally, Please Like Me won three AACTA Awards and was nominated for several Logies during its three year run. It was also nominated for an international Rose d'Or award.
ABC's Head of Comedy, Rick Kalowski said he was disappointed the show had come to an end, but said ABC would stand behind Thomas's next television venture.
"It's with a sad heart that ABC TV farewells Please Like Me - among our very finest and most acclaimed series ever."
"Our thanks to Josh for his vision... and above all to the fans, who kept this show alive through four magnificent seasons.  Whatever is next for Josh in television, ABC will want to be there".
Just last year, Lena Dunham told News Corp how Thomas's show deserved to be "winning every Emmy in the world".
"The sense of humour is just so high level. And I would love to work with him. He's such a funny actor. I'm like America needs some Josh Thomas."
However the ratings for the ABC2 series struggled in their finale season, hovering between 130,000 and 220,000 in the capital city markets.
