Irineu Evangelista de Souza (1813-1889), o Barão de Mauá, ou Visconde de Mauá foi um notável empresário, industrial, banqueiro, político e diplomata brasileiro. Foi um símbolo dos capitalistas empreendedores brasileiros do século XIX.O Barão de Mauá nasceu em Arroio Grande, município de Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul. Órfão de pai viajou para o Rio de Janeiro, em companhia de um tio, capitão da marinha mercante e, aos 11 anos, empregou-se como balconista de uma loja de tecidos. Passando a trabalhar na firma importadora de Ricardo Carruthers (1830), este lhe ensinou inglês, contabilidade e a arte de comerciar.Aos 23 anos tornou-se gerente e logo depois sócio da firma.A viagem que fez à Inglaterra em busca de recursos (1840), convenceu-o de que o Brasil deveria caminhar para a industrialização. Iniciando sozinho afrente do ousado empreendimento de construir os estaleiros da Companhia Ponta da Areia, fundou a indústria naval brasileira (1846), em Niterói, RJ, e, em um ano, já tinha a maior indústria do país, empregando mais de mil operários e produzindo navios, caldeiras para máquinas a vapor, engenhos de açúcar,guindastes, prensas, armas e tubos para encanamentos de água. Da Ponta da Areia saíram os navios e canhões para as lutas contra Oribe, Rosas e López. A partir de então, dividiu-se entre as atividades de industrial e banqueiro.O Barão de Mauá foi pioneiro no campo dos serviços públicos: fundou uma companhia de gás para a iluminação pública do Rio de Janeiro (1851),organizou as companhias de navegação a vapor no Rio Grande do Sul e no Amazonas (1852), implantou a primeira estrada de ferro, da Raiz da Serra a cidade de Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro (1854), inaugurou o trecho inicial da União e Indústria, primeira rodovia pavimentada do país, entre Petrópolis e Juiz de Fora (1854), realizou o assentamento do cabo submarino (1874) e muitas outras iniciativas.Em sociedade com capitalistas ingleses e cafeicultores paulistas, participou da construção da Recife and São Francisco Railway Company, da ferrovia dom Pedro II (atual Central do Brasil) e da São Paulo Railway (hoje Santos-Jundiaí).Iniciou a construção do canal do mangue no Rio de Janeiro e foi o responsável pela instalação dos primeiros cabos telegráficos submarinos, ligando o Brasil à Europa.No final da década de 1850, o visconde fundou o Banco Mauá, MacGregor &Cia;, com filiais em várias capitais brasileiras e em Londres, Nova Iorque,Buenos Aires e Montevidéu.Liberal, abolicionista e contrário à Guerra do Paraguai, forneceu os recursos financeiros necessários à defesa de Montevidéu quando o governo imperial decidiu intervir nas questões do Prata (1850) e, assim, tornou-se persona non grata no Império. Suas fábricas passaram a ser alvo de sabotagens criminosas e seus negócios foram abalados pela legislação que sobretaxava asim portações.O Barão de Mauá foi deputado pelo Rio Grande do Sul em diversas legislaturas, mas renunciou ao mandato (1873) para cuidar de seus negócios,ameaçados desde a crise bancária (1864). Com a falência do Banco Mauá(1875) o visconde viu-se obrigado a vender a maioria de suas empresas acapitalistas estrangeiros. Doente, minado pelo diabetes, só descansou depois de pagar todas as dívidas, encerrando com nobreza, embora sem patrimônio.

Sinopse: Arroio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul. É nesta pequena localidade que vivia Irineu Evangelista de Souza (Paulo Betti) e tudo indicava que passaria sua vida ali (ou pelo menos grande parte), mas o destino interveio e de forma funesta, pois ainda garoto Irineu se tornou órfão, quando seu pai foi morto por ladrões de gado. Dois anos depois, sua mãe decidiu se casar novamente com João Jesus, mas como o padrasto não aceitava um enteado Irineu foi morar no Rio de Janeiro com Batista, seu tio. No Rio vai trabalhar no armazém do português Pereira de Almeida (Elias de Mendonça), onde o jovem Irineu descobre ter jeito para os negócios, pois tinha uma visão ampla do que iria acontecer no comércio. Ele se torna um funcionário de confiança e um cobrador impiedoso, levando Queiroz (Hugo Carvana) ao suicídio após tomar todos os bens (inclusive escravos) como pagamento de uma grande dívida. Irineu defendia o fim da escravidão por razões econômicas e era um homem de palavra, o que faz seu talento ser reconhecido por Richard Carruthers (Michael Byrne), um escocês que vivia no Brasil, que o emprega em sua firma de exportação e lhe dá as primeiras noções das teorias econômicas. Alguns anos depois, Carruthers diz que sente o mesmo que os negros, banzo, que é saudade da terra natal, pois ficara rico no Brasil mas deixara seu coração na Escócia. Assim, parte deixando Irineu comandando os negócios. Nesta altura da vida, Irineu se apaixonou pela sobrinha, May (Malu Mader), com quem irá se casar e ter vários filhos. Em Liverpool, Inglaterra, se deslumbra com a potência das fábricas e decide liquidar sua empresa comercial para se arriscar na construção da primeira indústria brasileira, uma fundição e estaleiro em Ponta de Areia, Niterói. Desde quando começou a enriquecer, Irineu ganhou um inimigo para toda a vida, o Visconde de Feitosa (Othon Bastos), que o via como um aventureiro que sonhava apenas em ganhar mais dinheiro e desviar o Brasil da sua "vocação agrícola". Irineu queria modernizar o país, mas sofreria mais obstáculos do que seria capaz de imaginar, pois seria prejudicado por estrangeiros mas principalmente pelos brasileiros que pertenciam a uma oligarquia, que apenas queriam usufruir os bens sem nada produzir.

Mauá, São Paulo
Mauá (IPA: [ma'wa]) is a municipality in the state of São Paulo, in Brazil. Is part of the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The population as of 2006 is 413,943 inhabitants (11th largest city in population number of the state), the density is 6,645.4/km² and the area is 62.6 km². The density is in fact bigger, since one third of the city is occupied by industries and 10% is countryside or forest. Its name comes from the Tupi language and means the one that is high. As it's a municipality, it can also be translated as high city. However, back when the city was a small village, its name was Pilar, then the name was changed in 1934 into Mauá as a homage to Visconde de Mauá, entrepreneur which built the railway Santos-Jundiaí that passes through the city.
Mauá has the 23rd largest GDP of São Paulo state.
Is the birthplace of Brazilian tableware industry.
Economy
Although there are various types of economic activity in the city (Logistics, Metallurgy, Chemical and Electrical Materials, and Petrochemical), Maua is still remembered as the "Capital of China and Pottery", because this activity was very important for the development of the municipality. There are two industrial centers (Capuava and Sertãozinho) and a large petrochemical complex plant where the refinery of Petrobras is located, the RECAP. These poles transformed Mauá into one of the largest industrial parks in the country. Major road interventions are being implemented (the Mário Covas Beltway and the prolongation of the Avenue Jacu-Pêssego/Nova Trabalhadores), which, due to the improved access to the city should influence the growth of industrial activity, who nowadays suffers with the bottleneck of the road network and its chronic lack of maintenance.

Foi um símbolo dos capitalistas empreendedores brasileiros do século XIX.O Barão de Mauá nasceu em Arroio Grande, município de Jaguarão, Rio Grande do Sul. Órfão de pai viajou para o Rio de Janeiro, em companhia de um tio, capitão da marinha mercante e, aos 11 anos, empregou-se como balconista de uma loja de tecidos. Passando a trabalhar na firma importadora de Ricardo Carruthers (1830), este lhe ensinou inglês, contabilidade e a arte de comerciar.Aos 23 anos tornou-se gerente e logo depois sócio da firma.A viagem que fez à Inglaterra em busca de recursos (1840), convenceu-o de que o Brasil deveria caminhar para a industrialização. Iniciando sozinho afrente do ousado empreendimento de construir os estaleiros da Companhia Ponta da Areia, fundou a indústria naval brasileira (1846), em Niterói, RJ, e, em um ano, já tinha a maior indústria do país, empregando mais de mil operários e produzindo navios, caldeiras para máquinas a vapor, engenhos de açúcar,guindastes, prensas, armas e tubos para encanamentos de água. Dois anos depois, sua mãe decidiu se casar novamente com João Jesus, mas como o padrasto não aceitava um enteado Irineu foi morar no Rio de Janeiro com Batista, seu tio. No Rio vai trabalhar no armazém do português Pereira de Almeida (Elias de Mendonça), onde o jovem Irineu descobre ter jeito para os negócios, pois tinha uma visão ampla do que iria acontecer no comércio. Ele se torna um funcionário de confiança e um cobrador impiedoso, levando Queiroz (Hugo Carvana) ao suicídio após tomar todos os bens (inclusive escravos) como pagamento de uma grande dívida. Irineu defendia o fim da escravidão por razões econômicas e era um homem de palavra, o que faz seu talento ser reconhecido por Richard Carruthers (Michael Byrne), um escocês que vivia no Brasil, que o emprega em sua firma de exportação e lhe dá as primeiras noções das teorias econômicas. Alguns anos depois, Carruthers diz que sente o mesmo que os negros, banzo, que é saudade da terra natal, pois ficara rico no Brasil mas deixara seu coração na Escócia. Assim, parte deixando Irineu comandando os negócios. Nesta altura da vida, Irineu se apaixonou pela sobrinha, May (Malu Mader), com quem irá se casar e ter vários filhos. Em Liverpool, Inglaterra, se deslumbra com a potência das fábricas e decide liquidar sua empresa comercial para se arriscar na construção da primeira indústria brasileira, uma fundição e estaleiro em Ponta de Areia, Niterói. Desde quando começou a enriquecer, Irineu ganhou um inimigo para toda a vida, o Visconde de Feitosa (Othon Bastos), que o via como um aventureiro que sonhava apenas em ganhar mais dinheiro e desviar o Brasil da sua "vocação agrícola". Irineu queria modernizar o país, mas sofreria mais obstáculos do que seria capaz de imaginar, pois seria prejudicado por estrangeiros mas principalmente pelos brasileiros que pertenciam a uma oligarquia, que apenas queriam usufruir os bens sem nada produzir.

25 Things to do in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Travel Guide and Top Attractions Transcript:
First up, we started with the city’s most iconic sight: Christ Redeemer. We boarded the train as soon as the station opened and made our way to the top of Corcovado Mountain. Sometimes the statue can be shielded by fog, but we lucked out with beautiful blue skies and panoramic views of the city as far as the eye could see.
For a bit of colour, we headed over to the Selaron Steps, which is a tiled staircase created by Chilean artist, Jorge Selarón. Initially Selaron would scavenge construction sites looking for tiles, but in later years as his work gained notoriety, travellers began donating tiles.
Since we chose to stay in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, we ended up spending quite a bit of time at Ipanema Beach. We noticed that this beach was really popular for beach football, volleyball, and surfing. And of course, what makes this beach so iconic are its two mountains, known as Dois Irmãos. If you come here on a clear day, you can catch a killer sunset.
No visit to Rio de Janeiro would be complete without heading up Sugarloaf Mountain, so when the skies finally cleared that’s exactly what we did. We paid for our tickets and boarded the cable car for a somewhat unnerving ride up. If you’re scared of heights, this probably isn’t the attraction for you, however, if you manage to make it to the top you get some really cool panoramic views of Rio.
Copacabana Beach is the most famed beach in all of Rio de Janeiro and if you were to visit on a weekend during the summer months you’d find that the place is packed beyond belief. We happened to be here in winter so things were a lot more relaxed, but that didn’t stop visitors from braving the waters.
We did a favela tour to Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira. On our tour we saw lots of street art, learned about life inside a favela.

Though taxis are at the mercy of traffic as well, they’re still a good option at night, or if you just don’t want to use public transportation. You can hail taxis on the street or call through a company. Beware that prices may change according to traffic.
Of course, the best way to get around many of São Paulo’s neighborhoods is on foot. During the day, São Paulo is safe and pleasant to walk in.

The subway, called the Metrô, is reliable, safe, and easy to use. There are stops close to most of the places you’ll want to go.
Visit the Metrô website for information about fares, schedules, and subway maps.
If you want to go somewhere the Metrô won’t take you, you can probably get there by bus. Buses are popular with São Paulo’s locals, but you might have some trouble understanding the routes if you don’t understand Portuguese. Buses also can get very crowded, and are affected by traffic.
Though taxis are at the mercy of traffic as well, they’re still a good option at night, or if you just don’t want to use public transportation. You can hail taxis on the street or call through a company. Beware that prices may change according to traffic.
Of course, the best way to get around many of São Paulo’s neighborhoods is on foot. During the day, São Paulo is safe and pleasant to walk in.
As long as you plan ahead, you won’t have too much trouble getting around in São Paulo.

Belfast, located on the northeast coast of Ireland, is an eclectic mixture of history and modernity. Scattered throughout the countryside you’ll find Iron Age forts, medieval castles, and more modern construction dating to the 20th century. Belfast got on the fast track to modernizing in the 19th century, when it became known as a shipbuilding mecca. Among the famous vessels built at Belfast through the decades are the RMS Titanic and its sister ships, Olympic and Britannic.
A great deal of Belfast’s modern identity stems from over three decades of political and religious strife. These issues have influenced much of the city’s public art, as a great number of murals and statues depict people and events from those times. A walk around this easily accessible city is a walk through that troubled past.
You’ll probably be hungry after exploring so much of the city’s history on your Belfast tour, so swing on down to one of the local pubs to drink a pint and share a meal with some of the locals. Just walk down the street and head into what venue catches your eye; the city is easily navigable on foot, and you never know what sort of delightful gallery, park, or restaurant you’re going to find just around the bend.
