A five-year-old pre-kindergarten student collapsed in the cafeteria at her school and later died.

The little girl, Belen Maldonado, was at her lunch period around 11am on Thursday at Worth Heights Elementary School in Fort Worth when she collapsed.

She was rushed to Cook Children’s hospital, where she died about an hour and a half later, according to the Star-Telegram.

Her cause of death hasn't been released.

The family gave an interview to Telemundo Dallas saying they suspect that Belen choked during lunch and no one could save her in time. Spokesman Clint Bond ofthe Fort Worth Independent School district could only confirm that 'a child became ill in the cafeteria, and was transported to the hospital, where unfortunately we were advised that she died.'

The school, Worth Heights Elementary, said it can't discuss what happened due to federal law

A family member who started a GoFundMe for funeral expenses wrote 'Helping out a hard working family who has always worked to provide for the family. Sisters who always treasured every moment of their lives, today Baby Belen passed away at school during her lunch time.'

'My deepest condolences for the loss of your precious baby. Praying for your family to get through this very difficult time,' wrote a well-wisher.
