A man, 34, has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after having to be cut out of his car after it collided with an ambulance.
His Holden Commodore rammed into the back of the St John Ambulance at Telegraph Terrace in Alice Springs just before midnight local time, pushing the emergency vehicle off the road and into a tree.
Two ambulance staff, a 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman who had been responding to a call-out, received only minor injuries while the sedan driver became trapped in his damaged car.

He has since been freed by Northern Territory Fire and Rescue workers and rushed to hospital in a stable condition.
Cameron Dunbar, who witnessed the crash, described the sound of the collision on the Northern Territory police Facebook page.
'The noise that it made was insane. I thought someone had driven through a fence,' he wrote.

A police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that the road was closed for about seven hours while emergency services worked to free the man and police investigated the crash.
Police Duty Superintendent Brendan Muldoon told the ABC that the ambulance had not been on its way to attend an emergency call.
