That feeling when your wife and eldest daughter are in MSG watching Rangers-Canucks live and I’m in a zoom meeting and can’t even watch it on TV.

As I have been doing it for years, I had a look at the #NHMRC ideas grants outcomes. Congrats to the awardees % commiseration to the 89% that have missed out. Main take away this year. Drop in number of applicants, but also drop in the numbers of funded grants. Overall stable

Bohemian rhapsody for postdocs:
Is this a real job?
Or more like a PhD?
Caught in short contracts
No chance of stability
Open your eyes
Look up to PIs and see
I'm just a postdoc
I get no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Stress is high
Pay is low

First one to 10 wins!
In reality, quadrupling NHMRC and ARC would just be about the penalty paid for canceling the submarine contracts and waaaaayyy less than the overestimates on JobKeeper. The money is there, the will is not.

I wish @TheASMR1 would change their position on this! A doubling of NHMRC budget, while sounding nice, is wholly inadequate given that it has remained static for a decade. Quadruple it - then we are talking twitter.com/TheASMR1/statu…

Honestly Australia has one of the worst funding systems in the world. So much inefficiency, imbalance and ineptitude. And yet here we all go again spending the next 2 months writing for a 90% chance of getting nothing.

Has 100% hit the nail on the head. I have never before been so frustrated. Our research sector is in serious strife ATM and frankly it is hard to see how innovative research will survive.
