WHY THE BLUES WON
The Blues' ball movement was considerably slicker than that of the Pies. While Collingwood had the lion's share of inside-50 entries in the first half, it was Carlton who made them count, with Nat Exon, Brianna Davey, Lauren Brazzale and captain Lauren Arnell instrumental. It was Darcy Vescio who was the star, though, with the Blues goalsneak slotting four majors.

Packed Princes Park watches Carlton take debut win

Four goals from Darcy Vescio helped the Blues to victory over Collingwood after a lock out at Princes Park for the first ever AFLW match.

THE PLAY OF THE GAME
With the margin 11 points in Carlton's favour late in the second quarter, Blue Sarah Last powered her way through a congested centre square, brushing off a couple of would-be tacklers in the process. She tumbled a kick into the 50, where Bella Ayre gathered before handballing to Vescio, who charged into an open goal. It  typified the Blues' free-flowing and attractive style on the night. Collingwood just couldn't handle it.

THE MOMENT
When AFL chief Gillon McLachlan stood on the ground at quarter-time to apologise to those that had been turned away at the gates via the public address, it was official that the women's league had arrived in spectacular, barely believable fashion. To think that less than a fortnight ago this match was going to be held at a venue with capacity of around 5000! The AFL must have underestimated Melburnians' hunger for football.

WHAT THE RESULT MEANS
While the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle are also highly fancied, the Blues have showed they are likely to be thereabouts this season. With outsiders Greater Western Sydney at Ikon Park their next assignment, the Blues have a golden chance to start their campaign 2-0. The Pies will lick their wounds and will need a win next Saturday at home against Melbourne to keep pace with the top sides.
