AFLW: AFL will consider moving more women's games to bigger venues

The AFL will consider moving another Collingwood women's home game to Ikon Park after the stunning success of Friday night's AFLW opener.

Having shifted the Carlton-Collingwood match from the Pies' Olympic Park Oval training base to the Blues' traditional home in order to cater for more fans, the AFL's public expectations were still exceeded, as 24,500 crammed into the venue, leading to fans being turned away from the gates following police orders.

Packed Princes Park watches Carlton take debut win

Four goals from Darcy Vescio helped the Blues to victory over Collingwood after a lock out at Princes Park for the first ever AFLW match.

The Olympic Park venue has little seating, and has a capacity of around 5000. AFL game development manager Simon Lethlean said post-match that next Saturday's Collingwood-Melbourne venue could be moved from the Pies' ground too and be played as part of a double-header with the Blues' Ikon Park match against Greater Western Sydney.

"We've spoken to Collingwood to have a think about what that means to them as well. We don't want to have a game at Olympic Park if it's going to be locking people out and unsafe, so we'll have a look at that," Lethlean said.

"We could potentially bring that game here Saturday night, because Carlton are playing here Saturday afternoon. We could do a double-header here if we wanted to so we'll have a look at that.

"Collingwood were quite relaxed about [moving] this game. They're quite relaxed about next week. [Magpies chief executive] Gary Pert just said then, 'make the right call for safety and make the right call so that the most people get to the game.'

"We'll have a look at next weekend's matches tomorrow. "
