A man has been charged after allegedly forcing a woman into his car after he had fired a rifle at the ground in far north Queensland on Friday night.

Police said a man confronted two women at a Springmount Road residence in Mareeba, west of Cairns, about 11.30pm, allegedly armed with a rifle.

It will be alleged the gunman fired the rifle into the ground and forced one of the women into his car before driving away.

Officers responding to the incident found the man and the woman at a nearby Shaban Close address, where he was taken into custody.

A 28-year-old Mareeba man has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, dangerous conduct with a weapon and deprivation of liberty. He will appear in the Mareeba Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police said the man and two women were known to each other and it was being treated as a domestic violence incident. No one was injured.
