Eagles issue warning in Lions mauling

West Coast have delivered a statement in their opening game after trouncing Brisbane

Forget the 64-point margin; only the Brisbane Lions faithful would have expected anything better.

It wasn't the 43 possessions that Matt Priddis managed to rack up, nor Josh Kennedy's eight goals that would have made opposition sides sit up and take notice.

At this early stage of the season, it appears Eagles' ruck sensation Nic Naitanui has managed to silence the critics, and add a few feathers to his formidable bow.

In today's round one outing against Brisbane, Naitanui took six marks and notched up 22 possessions, to go with his 46 hit-outs , and two goals.

In comparison with last season, over 23 games he averaged just 1.4 marks a game and 11 possessions. Statistically, his best game was against Adelaide when he took four marks and had 19 touches. But he had eight games in 2015 without taking a mark and played in five others where he only took one. And he's averaged just 0.7 goals a game over a 131-game seven-season career.

We'll get a better understanding of how much he and the Eagles have improved next week when they tackle Hawthorn, the side that beat them by 46 points in last year's grand final.

As a result of his sterling on-ball efforts, the Eagles managed to build up a 39-point lead at half-time.

At that stage Priddis had 28 possessions. His previous best against Brisbane was 32, earned in 2007. He slowed a bit after half-time so his career best remains the 45 he had against Hawthorn in 2008.

And while West Coast forward Josh Kennedy kicked eight, he also gave off four other chances to hard-running teammates sitting alone in the goal-square (two to Jamie Bennell and one each to Elliot Yeo and Mark MeCras).

Lions' faithful were left concerned after captain Tom Rockliff suffered a wrist injury, which he appeared to carry for the entire second half of the game, finishing with 21 possessions.

Rockliff didn't play any games in the NAB Challenge, and will face a restrictions in prepararing for next week's match against North Melbourne.

Brisbane's Mitch Robinson is a further concern for round 2 after his name went into the umpire's book during the second quarter for misconduct.  He was benched with a sore calf midway through the final term, with 23 possessions next to his name.

The goals did come for Brisbane, 15 of them in total. Two from 18-year-old No. 2 draft pick Josh Schache who made a classy debut, with former Geelong player Josh Walker also booting two in his first game for the club.

Another former Cat, Allen Christensen, and young gun Lewis Taylor, finished the match with three apiece.
