Horror crash: Police in Kentucky say the owner of this vehicle had struck a pedestrian in Kenton County, then continued driving for nearly three miles with the body stuck in the windshield
The motorist finally pulled over at the Speedway gas station and went to get help
Witness Sigmund Sugarman tells Fox 19 he saw the damaged sedan drive past him while dragging a human body along the roadway.
'I thought it was a prank because there was this body hanging out of the window,' the man said.
A bystander recorded this cellphone video that purports to show a man believed to be the driver of the vehicle sitting on the curb and described the accident to police (pictured)
Sugarman said the driver then emerged from the vehicle, shaking, and went inside the gas station convenience store, asking a worker to call 911 because he had struck a pedestrian on Interstate 75.
Police responded to the scene and interviewed the motorist, with Sugarman shooting cellphone video of the exchange.
In the footage, the man is sitting on the curb telling two officers how he was driving along the highway when the victim attempted to cross it.
'I swerved to miss him and...' he clapped his hands to indicate the force of the impact.
Another witness Shawna Hudson told news outlets she and her husband were driving along the highway when she spotted something flapping against the windshield of the car directly in front of them, which she initially thought to have been a piece of plastic that had come loose, or a rug protruding from the front passenger window.
‘He had his flashers on and what turns out to be the legs of a person...but was just dangling from a fender and what turned out to be the foot was just bouncing off the ground as he just casually drove on,’ Hudson said. ‘I said, “That can't be real. That has to be a sick joke.”’
Coroner's officials later arrived to remove the body of the victim from the windshield, leaving behind a gaping hole
Witnesses: Shawna Hudson (left) and her husband were driving behind the vehicle with the body in the windshield, and initially they thought it was a piece of plastic that had come loose
Police shut down the highway for five hours to conduct an investigation, finally reopening it to traffic shortly before 6am.
An officer told the station WHIO they have recovered the victim's leg in the road about 150 yards away from the scene of the collision.
A coroner's van later arrived at the gas station to remove the deceased pedestrian from the windshield, and the vehicle was towed away.
As of Friday evening, the names of the driver and the victim have not been released, and no charges have been filed.
